Howard Stringer speaks Blu-ray

Despite the continuing success of Blu-ray, many pessimists continue to nit-pick Sony’s every move and comment as proof that they are not fully committed to the high definition platform anymore.

However, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer recently made a few comments about Blu-ray in which the media totally had a field day with. It was turned around to make it seem like Sony is losing focus and confidence in the format.

Well to clear things up, Stringer has spoken up once again touting the success of Blu-ray, in an attempt to prove that Sony is totally behind the format and will be for a long time. His comments are as followed:

"We believe Blu-ray has the best picture, more particularly the best security, the best capacity for future improvements and the amount of content we generate. And this last week we sold more hardware than HD-DVD, the total number of Blu-ray capable devices in the US is at 2.7 million in the US compared to 750,000 HD-DVD. We're selling software 2:1 on titles in the US, 3:1 in Europe, and Blu-ray recorders here in Japan stand at 98% of the market."

Later when asked if he would take the stance and say that Blul-ray is the definitive winner, Stringer followed back with:

"I wouldn’t anticipate, we have momentum given the numbers I told you on the 2:1 software ratio in US and 3:1 in Europe and beyond. But that’s all we have at the moment, is momentum. When you put those numbers together, PS3 is a...if you buy a PS3 for games, you get a Blu-ray player. We’ve always said that would help."

He says that all they have at the moment is momentum. So what happens when that momentum runs out? It still appears as if Sony is beating around the bush when it comes to Blu-ray at times, but sooner or a later, hopefully a more stronger stance would be taken, thus allowing others to follow.

I don't exactly know what Sony is doing with this. They can't have something going for them as good as the PS3 and BD at the same time and not be sure of themselves. Momentum? Does he know  something we don't? Because if he doesen't, there's only reason to believe that momentum will grow larger and larger as time goes on. It's impossible to back PS3 100% (which they are, just look at their new ad campaigning.) and not back BD 100%.

In conclusion, Howard Stringer is probably trying to get in Toshiba or M$'s heads, whoever the one is who markets HD DVD.

Relax people. Blu-ray has momentum yes, becuase it's still a new format. No one can with 100% certainty declare the winner. Even though Blu-ray has about 85% of the HD market there still is a (very) small chance that HD-DVD can win. As long as the fight is still here there war is not over. It's simple. But...

    GO BLU-RAY! :P

psn id: gingo... i think sony as a whole are very behind the idea of blu ray or they wouldn't have took the risk and put a blu ray player in every ps3 but it might just be this guy that isn't totally won over by the format

Then why is Blockbuster supporting only bluy-ray if it's gaining. Why support hd-dvd with no support from 5 major studios?

I love my Blu-Ray movies and love the fact that you don't have to buy the add-on feature like OTHER systems.

HD TV penetration rate as well as an increase of HD ready content for the consumer via blu ray will be the hallmark of it. Again they need to start pumping out TV series on these in order to really gain that foothold in ending this war.

People kill me. They are either too arrogant in there responses, or not arrogant enough. He is attempting to be PC about the situation. Had he said " yeah, we are and will beat HD-DVD" than everyone would be killing him for his arrogance.

Ive only got the one blue-ray at the moment, I will get more, but the prices are just to high right now, and all the good films on blue-ray I already own on dvd. plus my tv isnt hd, it just normal and I realy cant afford a hd tele just yet. But I do back blue-ray and tell every-one else to do the same, Sony/Blue-ray rules !!!!!

well i dont know why anyone would think Sony is shying away from blu-ray. Sony is one of the first backers of Blu-ray, one of the key contributors, and their PS3 runs on with blu-ray. It would be simply stupid to back out, so therefore i think its totally a flase statement and whoever said that was duche.

Actually if anything the author of this article sounds more like a nitpicker than anyone else. You dont want to say "we've totally won the war" when the opposition still has soldiers on the field that's just stupidity, so he did the smart thing and gave a confident but non-commital answer that dosent paint him into a corner should the slight possibility that he was wrong occur.
