Killzone 2 only using 60% of SPU's overall power?

Speaking in IGN's latest Play Beyond podcast, Jeff Haynes revealed that even during the heaviest loads, Killzone 2 utilizes roughly only 60 per cent of the SPU's.

"It's incredible to see huge levels and see the deferred rendering and note that on all the SPU’s, even on the heaviest load were coming up to about 60%," Haynes said. "They weren't coming close to maxing out. .They had about 40% of space before they started tripping or saw slow down on some of the processes."

Furthermore, Haynes noted that the preview codes recently distributed to various media outlets were of an alpha build of the title, and have since been polished up . Visiting Guerilla Games in Amsterdam, Haynes was shown an updated version of the game, mid to late beta, noting that elements such as lighting, cut scenes, glitches, load times, have all been optimized.

Killzone 2 is due out exclusively on PlayStation 3 on February 27, 2009.

60%!!! and it only looks like 50% better than gears of war 2!?! they better use that left over power for a better framerate, 60 fps would be good :D

Does Killzone 2 not run in 60fps?!!  If this is the case it shows other hardware(GPU,RAM) inside ps3 can not max out the spu performance. Multiplayer FPS games are not my favourites anyway, but i hope K2 delivers for many FPS fans.

If I'm not mistaken, Guerilla has stated before that Killzone 2 was only using 4 out of the 7 operational SPUs on the PS3. Which, if true, would mean that the "60% heaviest load" figure mentioned in this article was the worst-case scenario as measured on 1-to-4 SPUs at a time... with 2-3 more free SPUs completely left to spare.

    • 11:49am GMT - December 5th, 2008

We've seen the potential of Killzone 2,

now i'm waiting for that  gameplay of Final Fantasy XIII & see how its using those 4 SPU's :D

i love my ps3, but seriously i think this guy is exagerating, 60% only?? ithink its more like 70-80%. so this guy is trying to say that the all this great graphics and gameplay is using only half the power of the SPU, mmm yea right.

if what he is saying is true, why Crysis cant run on consoles, hmmm interesting question dont u think?

  20. Alpha2

    • 1:29pm GMT - December 5th, 2008

Keep in minf the 4 SPU figure was from a while back. There's a high probability that they're using mroe than just 4 now. 60% is a good bit of hardcore processing power assuming it's already well optimized at 60%. I wonder what they need to do to push it to 80?

Glitches have been optimized? But looking forward to this game, I'm even holding off on other FPS like R2 for this game. (don't have a lot of money atm)

  23. VaeVictus

    • 1:39pm GMT - December 5th, 2008

These % used figures are retarded. I could care less. Make the game look good (which they did) and run well (which they seem to be doing) and fun and I'll buy it. I've been looking forward to this game for some time. Too bad I couldn't get into the beta. :sadnana:

  24. Gomersoul | Gomersoul

    • 1:53pm GMT - December 5th, 2008

i think the reason crysis isn't on consoles is that crytek are either big headed or inexperienced on console development. saying it can't run on consoles is bollox. i bet it can if they had a good ps3 development team on it, they just don't have the knowhow within their company

    @ 22

KZ2 will be a day one buy, but holding off on R2. I understand about the $, but co-op in R2 will still be played well after KZ2 comes out. Yes co-op on R2 is that good!

    • 3:54pm GMT - December 5th, 2008

not surprised but still really really impressive just think what ps3 games will look and play like at 80% its almost like every generation of ps3 games we get is another console generation, the leaps between games are that huge

As far as crytek/crysis goes, first of all KZ2 beats crysis i have played the game on high setting and kz2 definitely tops it (crysis is still awesome though) Crytek has already stated that they won't be developing soley on pc anymore because of piracy and ps4 will be their lead platform next generation. It was in an article on here i believe

    • 4:52pm GMT - December 5th, 2008

That's impressive, but athough the future does look promising, remember not all developers are as great or dedicated as GG are, so although games will look better as time goes on, not all will set the bar as high as KZ2! February can't come soon enough :)

all you gotta see in action is god of war 2 on the ps2, it does take a long time to get the best results. Around 60% they are stating and from what I have seen in videos is amazing. I am looking forward to this title alot, everytime a shooter is released I say to myself oh its just another shooter but this is the shooter of all shooters.

First off, I'm in the beta the thing that really amazes me is the dl was only 459Mb!!!Now on the other hand, I think that the figures are correct(about the 60% mark)because the dev's are "working out" the programming issues(gettin' smarter?)that they had in the past.Maybe this is the first leap the PS3 is going to take as far as software development goes...

    • 6:58pm GMT - December 5th, 2008

Good to see the PS3 hasn't hit a wall yet, not that I think it would so early on. I don't think we'll ever see games pushing 100% (frame rate drops and whatnot) it looks like there will be room for improvement in Killzone 3.

    2013 here we come =D

  34. Zadok | Zadok

    • 9:03pm GMT - December 5th, 2008

Well this seems to point to bad system hardware design if they aren't able to max out the SPU's with bottlenecks in the system likely not allowing them to be fully utilised, and still lacking ingame music is a great example of one such bottleneck, that being too little RAM.

ROFL 360 would crash and burn if it tried to run KZ2

BTW SOLWAY you're kinda dumb aren'tcha? Killzone 2 is being developed by Guerilla Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment.  360 port will never happen.

  39. myke6699

    • 8:33am GMT - December 6th, 2008

I hope people misconstur and think this is like CPU usage. I think what it means is that at this point, like in the early days of PS2, dev are now only able to utilise and extract so much of the PS3 full potential.  KZ2 is as much a game as it is an R&D project and what GG are able to learn in the process of developing this game, would definitely benefit the other PS3 dev.  Once 100% limit is reached, PS4 will probably be just around the corner or like when God of War II was released for PS2, PS3 was already on the market.

SOLWAY: YOUR WRONG!!!! i dont know what kind of blog your reading but its wrong like you Killzone 2 is a PS3 exclusive and will not be coming out for the xbox 360 infact that is the one thing sony made sure of so that this could boost the Ps3 up.
