Kojima feels they underachieved with MGS4

We think everyone can agree to the fact that Kojima is nothing but a perfectionist.  So it comes as no surprise that he is a bit disappointed with Metal Gear Solid 4 and the way it turned out.  To some, this may sound like a heartbreaking comment; however, we all know that the man desires nothing shy of perfection and we all know that no console can deliver that yet.  In the latest issue of EDGE magazine from the UK, Hideo Kojima displays his displeasure with not the overall gameplay itself, but with the graphics that Metal Gear Solid 4 will contain.

"Game-wise, it's pretty close to the original vision: you sneak into the battlefield and can choose whether to do a stealth game or interfere with the battle more directly. But the graphic, side things like motion-blending and the size of the map, totally was not accomplished to my original vision - to my satisfaction.

"When we first showed the game engine at TGS, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y'know, and we were going to work on this and that - and we had so many ideas. But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress."

From what we can gather, Kojima over estimated the capabilities of the PlayStation 3 and couldn't truly achieve what he was trying to reach graphically.

"I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn't really do that because of the CPU. We're using the Cell engine to its limit., actually. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the PS3 machine, it's just that we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered - we were creating something we couldn't entirely see."

Obviously Kojima isn't criticizing the PS3 as he states himself, unfortunately, it wasn't capable of offerring him the power he was looking for.  After all of the videos and previews we've seen regarding MGS4, it is almost too hard to believe that Kojima isn't happy with the look of the game.  From where we're sitting, the game looks phenomenal as we're sure you'd agree.

With Metal Gear Solid 4 scheduled for release on June 12 and the online beta starting officially on the 21 of April, we'll keep you up to date with any new information that comes out.

I don't think it will go multiplatform because isnt the 360 not as powerful as the PS3? So if the PS3 didn't have it, it would be a waste of time to try and port it over.

It's a shame that he was no here near the graphical expectation he wanted.  The PS3 is a very very powerful machine and I'm absolutly suprised he would say this.  Just like he said Blu-Ray wasn't big enough.  I'm hoping that he didn't fully utilize the cell and its unique architecture, but rather only thought he did.

Kojima is a brilliant man and he realized that sometimes we can fall short of our expectations. The game is nothing but brilliant gameplay and graphical wise. On the other hand you know the japanese are overachievers

Man thats crazy, the PS3 not good enough for this game. Thats insane. This game is going to kick major a**. I cant even believe that he wanted to do more than what is there already. It looks amazing and heard it plays amazing.

    @ShinobiNYC

If that ever happened, we'd have another "Crysis" situation on our hands where only a $4000 PC can ever hope to max out the settings at decent frames. The problem I have with Kojima's statement is that he 'did' criticize the PS3 hardware and said 'he didn't'. If he's going to criticize something, then dammit do it!! Tired of japanese people when they beat the bush like that. - yeah it's stereotyping, but I see this too often.

There is no hardware nor likely will there ever be to match Kojima's creative vision, this is something I have seen to be true throughout the last 20 years. Does this mean MGS4 won't be the blockbuster we're all waiting for? Absoloutely not. Just from the gameplay features that have been revealed it's looking to once again prove to be the title that pushes the bar forward in terms of the quality expected in video games.

That's a great attitude; "We can do better". The next MGS game is going to be even better. Which rarely happens with series, just look at Medal of Honour, after Frontline, was kinda samey since.

I feel sorry for Kojima, but hey! PS3 is a game machine after all, not a CGI monster after all. However, I DO doubt that developers have already tapped all of PS3's power. I would like to see what the Kojima Productions team can achieve in a few years from now on PS3.

MGS4 will be a great game, no doubt about it.  Why Kojima limited himself to a single Blu-ray is beyond me if he had more content.  Why not have 2 50s, a 50 for the main game and a 25 for the features, or just have 3 25s for faster access time?  A little too late now I guess.

I understand where he's coming from though: in a lot of the stuff I draw I notice imperfections and thus dislike the drawing but everyone else can't see wats wrong wid it i think thats wat hes going through but even sooo i think all he needed was a 100gb blu ray disk and more time to get wat he truely wanted but as i jus sd this is most likeley wat hes going thru and we shud support him no matter what he says coz hes a great game designer!!!

    @Macphisto

That they can do better? After he said they were limited by the cell ie the ps3 isn't powerful enough to expres his vision of mgs, i doubt that will ever happen. If what Kojima says is true then we should expect nothing more than what mgs4 has to offer to offer.

  18. psycho_mantis | makaveli_71

    • 5:40pm BST - April 18th, 2008

This could mean kojima can accomplish his visions maybe on the ps4 with an mgs5 or something, ya never know. Anyways this will be a groundbreaking game, no doubt about it.

  19. Jackobinen

    • 5:45pm BST - April 18th, 2008

I seriously doubt that MGS4 is "pushing Cells limits". Yes, he might be right when he says that they used all the CPU but what about the 8 SPU's. Did they use them at all? Insomniac is saying that Resistance 2 isnt using all the power of the SPU's, Guerilla is saying the same thing for Killzone 2! These games look a lot better than MGS4 and they arent even in beta yet. They just have to learn to use the PS3  in the right way to get all the power out of it.

I honestly think kojima didnt rush mgs4 since it had its delays and everything already, the Final product is that the game is done its just he wished maybe more could of been added like the Audio files for the japanese voices / english subtitles combo sorta thing.

    • 6:09pm BST - April 18th, 2008

Im sorry to say if only Sony had 500mb ram and 500mb virtual memory, then games would not have much limits and PS3 would be even better than the most powerful PC. the XBOX 360 have 500mb flexible memory, but other than that, the PS3 beats XBOX 360 totaly. PS3 have 500mb for ram and virtual memory, but it is split and not flexible like the XBOX 360. But much really depends on the developer of the games

  24. Nosferatu

    • 6:20pm BST - April 18th, 2008

Kojima could just present a brand new IP title exclusivly for the PS3 and it would be on a 250gb blu ray disc and he would have plenty of space and he could throw most of his ideas in the disc. Perhaps, making a 75gb space of game It's like there's forever and still time for him to make an even greater saga/franchise of a new ip.

And i honestly think all of this is probably kojima just realizing its hard to let something sooo close to heart go , but since this is the final mgs game of its franchise he should make the ending that leaves the gamers thinking but it reveals things but sorta just ends the story forever and leaves nothing open even spin offs.

  25. BigBoss11

    • 7:02pm BST - April 18th, 2008

  26. Stickemup

    • 7:07pm BST - April 18th, 2008

@Nosferatu - It doesn't end the MGS universe. Kojima is a huge liar when it comes to that. I'm pretty sure it's the ending of Snake in a MGS game, but that's it. Everybody knows he will revist the universe, one way or another. That's why he specifially states that he's finishing off 'Snake'. Maybe if the game took place in a universe like ours, we could really be sure of things. But come on? If he wanted to, he could find a way to bring Snake back.

I have just one question for Kojima San; Since the current configuration of the ps3 wasn't enough to completely bring forth his ideas, what was lacking in this configuration that would have helped him run his dream game smoothly??More ram, powerful gpu or cpu or a larger storage medium.

If sony wants its next console to be greater than they should contact Kojima and let him give them an idea of the type of hardware config that is needed for this console to run the next mgs, which will likely be the most demanding game ever.

hmmmm he wanted to create a monster game, more guy he just wanted us to see wht the future can bring us and make our eyes pop out, imagine the game look magnificent, and kojima is not satisfied but we r imagine when kojima is satisfied we will propably fall on the ground start rolling like nuts crapping our self and die!! Lol

    • 7:59pm BST - April 18th, 2008

He should start off by telling us what his expectations were in order to make this whole convo valid. Just like if a car designer says i cud have done better , only to find out the missing component was to make it fly . Kojima must be more practical talen the 50 Gb was too little , but maybe Sony cud jump in and make  a 100 Gb one , but i think thats the only valid reason he has for the game not being better

maybe i overestimated ps3 aswell............but even if so, it hasent lost one spec of my respect for it, sony will hea this, and i bet PS4 will be much more powerful than the ps3, im not all that worried about ps3's max power, i was, but n ot anymore, why? cuz sony is working on that unamed, but major ps3 exclusive, i think this is the one tha will show ps3's true power, lets hope, do it sony! blow microsoft away again! :)

All this time Kojima thought the graphics was only OK, while I always thought the graphics was really really really good.  This has happened with a lot of games where the games fell short due to hardware limitations.  The ps3 is a very powerful machine but it still has a limit.

Why is this David Wales guy trying to turn around everythig that Kojima said - FFS it's an interview with Kojima not a stupid comentary from some no-body hack writter. Just let him say what he wants then we can judge the results ourselves thanx.

Who cares if MGS4 doesnt live up to the hype anyway. Its a great story, a great game series and few games ever live up to the hype about graphics anyway. I think people expect too much.

I agree with some of the other posts that suggest that maybe Konami are considering the PC if sales are not good enough. That would not be a bad thing - as it will bring more people into the whole MGS world and justify continuing the series.

  42. Alpha2

    • 9:33am BST - April 19th, 2008

Actually I think it's an effort to lower peoples expectations of the game. Sure we all konw it's going to be a great game but some people have this godly impression that the game is going to do back flips out of the box, french them, walk across water and then slip into the PS3 all on it's own. It's not. it's a game, a game that will e really really good but still a game and with dissapointment in big games this past year like Halo3 and masseffect he figures the only way to get his game a fair shake is to get people to have more realistic expectations.

  43. Psiri

    • 9:51am BST - April 19th, 2008

I agree with alpha 2 ... I think he is basically saying " keep your expectations level" Don't expect to play a game that looks like a CGI intro , because the system cant achieve that. NO SYSTEM or PC can run games at full cgi capabilities . I think that's what every develepors vision and players vison is , on how a game should look like and be played through, should look like. THIS gen it will never happen . Imagine playing gt5 the way it looks like when the game boots up?? The intro looks out of this world real time graphics , just wow . . But you click start and the game looks meh!!!!

That's what he is saying the game that he wanted to create would have looked great if the system was able to achieve his vision ... so he says we tried are best with the time given and the machine given and we got this normal looking game   ... not revolutionary  looking , but meh!!!!

Thats what i think ... I was expecting cgi graphics for this gen ... maybe next !

and he says hes using the ps3 to its max that is sure not true look for other games and your sure to find out that no one yet has been able to use the full power of the console yet aswell go to Wikipedia and read a bit.
