Sony has finally confirmed reports of a new PlayStation Portable iteration. Dubbed the PSP-3000, the updated handheld will include a couple of new features and be sold in eight bundles across PAL regions.

So what's new? The LCD screen has received an upgrade, allowing it to display brighter colours and better image quality. In addition, it'll feature an in-built microphone to push the PSP as a communications device using Go!Messenger and Skype.

And that's about it. Definitely not as big a leap from PSP 1000 to 2000 (Slim & Lite), but perhaps a way to earn a few more customers who have been sitting on the fence. The updated PSP will be released in Europe, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand on October 15. It'll be bundled with one game for €199.

For North America, it'll arrive on October 14 in two bundles. The first will include Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, whilst the second will throw in a 4GB memory stick and a PSN voucher for Everyday Shooter for a retail price of $199.

Good thing, that there aren't any internal(memory related) changes in this, the existing LCD is good enough for me,and i've been wanting to buy a headset for my psp in the first place, still, good for new consumers though, this is an awesome piece of equipment.

When I first read this I was thinking it was a PSP v2.0 and was very excited that perhaps Sony would come out with a new PSP with TWO analog joysticks.  The biggest gripe I hear from developers is that people priate games on the PSP AND that it is a pain to do normal games because of the lack of a second stick.  Please Sony do something about the second stick.

I'd be willing to bet it's been updated not to allow custom firmware.

Sony needs to get rid of that UMD format and use solid-state drive storage. That would make it slimmer, lighter, and really boost the battery life. Movies and content could just be downloaded or streamed. I hope that's what their working on.

i have two slims, one ice silver (brand new stored away) and one piano black....im cosidering selling one in order to get this new PSP-3001 series......although im wondering is a built-in microphone, and better, brighter screen really warrant the purchase of a new psp when my piano black slim psp works like a charm?

Reports have revealed that the main reason they'er making this 3000 IS to make it harder to hack. If anyone really cared about PSP you wouldn't be to jumpy about this article. The memory does still need a serious upgradeing though to keep up with todays web and the games. Too bad that won't happen anytime soon.
