Grand Theft Auto VI Includes ‘Significantly Narrower Roads’ Than GTA V, Weapons System More Like Red Dead Redemption 2

Jason Schreier has revealed following a visit to Rockstar North’s Edinburgh, Scotland headquarters that Grand Theft Auto VI will feature “significantly narrower” roads than its predecessor, having been informed of this by the game’s art director Aaron Garbut.

The Bloomberg journalist noted that he didn’t notice this until it was pointed out by the developers. GTA V took place in a city inspired by Los Angeles, and therefore featured wide roads, allowing players to easily circumvent other traffic and offered plenty of room to cruise through the bustling streets. This naturally wasn’t very realistic when you consider how the real-life LA is, and therefore the lack of traffic was a bit jarring.

With GTA VI however, Rockstar North has implemented narrower roads where traffic will very much be a key factor. “All these things sort of come to bite you later,” commented Garbut, with the increase traffic and narrower roads resulting in more buildings. In addition, Rob Nelson stated that the team wanted the weapons system in GTA VI to align more with Red Dead Redemption 2, in the sense players couldn’t lug around a small armoury of firearms. Instead, they implemented a more realistic system where you have to select a loadout and have a limited number of weapons you can carry.

Grand Theft Auto VI is pencilled in for a November 19, 2026 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Rockstar Games recently previewed a number of radio stations for the game, which will include dedicated outlets for the likes of heavy metal, pop, rap, and more.
