Media Molecule: Small team was vital to the creation of LBP

Posted on October 7th, 2008 at 00:42 EDT

Media Molecule, the already-acclaimed development studio behind LittBigPlanet, is comprised of only 30 people. That's right, 30. While other studios house over a hundred, maybe even several hundred developers, Media Molecule created LittleBigPlanet with less than three dozen. Media Molecule co-founder Mark Healey says the team size "worked out well" during the game's creation.

"We're always conscious of wanting to have a small team," Healey said to GamesIndustry.biz. "I've worked from just myself in my bedroom to being in a room with 200 people, and every range in between you can imagine. In my experience, about 30 people was when I had the most fun."

"People genuinely put a lot of love, heart and soul into the game because their contribution really matters," he added. "Everyone can look at that game and see themselves in it. Everyone's really integrated into it."

We wouldn't have it any other way, Mark. LittleBigPlanet is launching on a PS3 near you very, very soon.

i've worked in a 30 person team, it works great, and they're right, you can really see and know who made what, and it's not just some huge team where only your lead knows your name

That's awesome.  I've been pouring hours into playing the beta and still feel like I haven't unlocked every cool little thing yet.  Yeah, I think most fun games are usually made by a small group of people.  These 30 people are gonna be RICH$$$  If you are looking for a game you can play for years and years and not get tired of it, LBP is the game for you.   It's like the video game equivelent to Legos.  Nobody gets tired of Legos.  NOBODY!

psn id: gingo... people always assume more is better but for devleopment teams when every1's opinions can be heard and implemented it really makes for a fantastic game maybe EA should take a leaf out of their book

Seems like big teams tend to put out garbage if they arent reigned in frequently, its nice to see something close to a return to the old days when a few people could gather in someones garage and put out the next ginormous hit.
