Microsoft and Blu-ray talking all along

According to one of Microsoft’s lead marketing guys, Jeff Bell, Microsoft has been in talks with Blu-ray for a long time now.  With what he’s said, it sort of sounds like Microsoft is a bit concerned over the Warner Bros switch, even though they don’t really say it directly.

Jeff had this to say about the situation, "We've been talking to Blu-ray all along because we have the best piece of software in the business, called HDi. It is the backbone that powers interactivity in HD-DVD and we have that available to potentially partner with others," also during his conversation with 1up, he also had this to say. "You never say never. I think we'd like to see how things evolve. Our commitment, however, to HD-DVD is profound and consistent, and we have done very, very well in term of our accessory sales."

Obviously Microsoft still qualifies Paramount, DreamWorks, and Universal as prime supporters for the HD DVD format, but how long do they feel this will stay concrete?  The possibility of both Paramout and DreamWorks jumping ship are very high, as is the opportunity for Universal to back both formats with their decision to not renew their exclusive contract.

This could only mean good things for the Blu-ray format, as expanding your market in any area is only going to do well.  Even if it means an add-on for the rival console on the market, it would eventually help put an end to the format war and finally get Blu-ray supporters the entire list of movies released.

In other words they are preparing for Blu-ray to be possible for future consoles perhaps when this format war ends. They are trying not to be left behind from the looks of it.

whatever, its was over weeks ago. obviously no company is going to be erogent and stay with HD DVD.  it is just a memory  like betamax and thats what HD DVD is worth now.

HDi?  Are they kidding?  Do they really think Blu Ray is going to move to HDi?Blu Ray is using BD-J (Java based interactivity).

Microsoft's HDi is the reason why there is a format war in the first place.

Micro$oft want to confuse the consumer so they have time to prepare their downloadable content platform, its their way of wasting peoples time so they have time to prepare a system with less faults (Unlike with the Xbox 360 I.E. full of faults cause it was rushed)

Microsoft= evil. There planning on taking out blu ray indircetly. By supporting it then saying it is worth Cr@p! poeple will beleve this and not by it. Then at the same time taking sony down. It is brilliant, but evil. They want to have every thing be downloadible!

That's like.........Good product  + Bad product  = Fcked up product.

Obviously Blu ray being the good and the 360 being the bad.

I think if the 360 gets a Blu-Ray drive then that is bad news for the PS3, that takes away one of the advantages the PS3 has over the 360.

I don't blame Microsoft for hanging on the HD-DVD wagon for as long as they have; even in the midst of defeat they still cling on to the very last strands of life.  To feel "defeated" by Sony and Blu-ray must have hit them pretty hard emotionally.  If Microsoft and Sony can work together for Blu-ray, then I see many good things happening in the future.

Microsoft wants a piece of that mraket, and they know HD-DVD is likey going to loose. God forbid MS not have their hand in everything and making rediculous profit for little effort. They want their buggy HD software on Blu-ray. Sony, don't take their money!

  28. Alpha2

    • 8:33pm GMT - January 28th, 2008

This is their way of trying to look like they were supporting the winner regardless of who actually wins. It's like saying "Yeah we're backing Gore but we've been having lunches with Bush jr. to get to know him just because he looks like he might have a chance."

Don't be folled into thinking MS will join the Blu-Ray camp and have  a Blu-Ray add-on for the 360 or thier next console. All they are looking for is exclusive rights to the software that drives Blu-Ray so they can make more money!

no matter what, they will never be able to get rid of blu ray.  personally i think blu ray is the way it should be.  but i dont make these decisions. so i guess only time (and sales) will tell.

MS probably talks to BDA probably like this

"Oh BDA, please use HDi! Otherwise we can no longer get royalties from the HD disc-based movie industry."

So M$ basically said,if HD-DVD doesn't increase it's sales, they'll say "SCREW YOU TOSHIBA" and agree to let BDA use the HDi software in Blu-ray.Sounds good to me.

HDI is the closed format Microsoft language that competes with Java.  Microsoft only backed HD-DVD because they hate Java, and now that Java is open source they have a lot more to hate.  When (not if), Blue-Ray becomes the defacto standard in most houses, then people will have a LOT more than a DVD player.  They will have a player that can run a very rich development languate AND good storage for their data.  Bascially developers can start to do some very cool stuff with content on a Blue-Ray disc.  That cool stuff will NOT require any Microsoft product(s) and that probably scares Microsoft some.

I would love to be at the table again when Microsoft tries to negotiate with Sun again for a Java licence.

*sigh* M$ what shall we do with you. Sony doesnt need your HDi. Sony wont give you thier Blu-ray drive to use in your console either. HD DVD has failed and taking on water faster then they can bail it out. Your crashbox is the next to fall.
