Take-Two is working on new games in its established franchises as well as fresh IP, company president Karl Slatoff confirmed during the publisher’s latest earnings call overnight.
“Our worldwide development teams are working on numerous unannounced projects, including new intellectual properties, and offerings from our established franchises,” said Slatoff.
In addition, Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two’s Chief Operating Officer (CEO), confirmed that at least one of the new games will be released at some point in 2016, though did not clarify if the new title(s) would be from an existing franchise or a new IP. Regardless, it sounds as if the company has plenty of new games in the pipeline, so expect some announcements to drop as the New Year gets underway.
Take-Two has a number of popular video game franchise under its umbrella, including the likes of Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto, BioShock, and Borderlands. While a follow-up to Grand Theft Auto V seems unlikely at this point, rumors on a sequel to Red Dead Redemption have been doing the rounds for a while now, and we’re still none the wiser as to what’s happening with BioShock following the closure of Irrational Games after 2013’s BioShock Infinite.
As for Borderlands, we already know that developer Gearbox Software is working on Borderlands 3 for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, though at this point we don’t know when the game will actually be released. To date, the series has shipped 23 million copies worldwide since its inception in 2009 with the original Borderlands. As for Red Dead Redemption 2, developer Rockstar has said that the sequel is done to a matter of timing, though many see a new game inevitable following news that the original game has shipped 14 million units globally since its launch in May 2010.
Grand Theft Auto V meanwhile has been a massive commercial success for Take-Two, shipping a whopping 54 million units around the world since its release in September 2013. Of course, it also helped that the open-world crime sequel was eventually released for PS4 and Xbox One in addition to the original PS3 and Xbox 360 release; the current-gen versions sold-in 10 million units alone. If that wasn’t enough, GTA V officially became the U.K.’s biggest-selling video game of all time as of November last year.”>U.K.’s biggest-selling video game of all time as of November last year.
Of course, we could be barking up the wrong tree completely, and perhaps Rockstar is in fact beavering away on a sequel to 2006’s Bully.
