PS Vita troubleshooting tips #2 – Cannot obtain location data/GPS problems

We’ve heard there are a few issues with PS Vita’s GPS not tracking correctly, which also impacts the functionality of NEAR.

Follow these steps to fix the problem:

1. Check that the time is set accurately on your unit. It must be set correctly in order for the GPS to pin-point your location.

2. A variety of things inside a building can interfere with a GPS signal so try standing in an outside location to get a clear signal. Try getting a GPS signal in numerous locations before you give up!

3. Be patient, picking up a GPS signal can take five minutes or even longer.

If you still can’t connect, or it’s not picking up your location accurately, check out the Skyhook website.

There is some debate in gaming forums about whether Skyhook is a trustworthy company. There’s absolutely no need to be worried as Skyhook, who specialises in location-based technology, is affiliated with Sony.

So, here’s what you do. Head to: http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/coverage.php

1. Type your post code into the “Address lookup” field and check to see if your location appears accurately.

2. Map your location by clicking “Map It.” You can then drag the marker around the map and pin-point your street.

3. Submit that Wi-Fi access point. You will need to know the MAC address of your router. You can find this by entering your router’s settings via the digit-based URL associated with your router. If you don’t have this information, phone your router manufacturer and ask them for it.

4. Type in your email address and submit the information. You should then receive an email from Skyhook. The bad news is that it can take a few weeks for them to update the information.

If none of the above solutions fix the issue, contact Sony support.
