PS3 outsold 360 in February, say Microsoft

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg has said that he expects Sony’s PlayStation 3 to have outsold the Xbox 360 in February, in what he labels as a “hollow victory” for the rival platform holder.

The Xbox 360 Group Product Manager told next-gen.biz, “Our expectation is that because of our shortages at retail during February, we will sell less than PS3.”

“That’s not a surprise to us. I don’t know what Sony’s reaction will be to that, but it will definitely be a bit of a hollow victory. The competition sure didn’t show up [in February].”

Despite this, Greenberg noted that the Xbox 360 has outsold the PS3 by as much as two-to-one “every single month” when the console has been in stock.

Full US NPD hardware figures are expected later today.

    If it has out sold it 2 to 1 every month, How did the PS3 get to 10 million 4 months faster...Whatever.  I won't even make anymore comments until the PS3 over takes it...just like I did with Blu vs HD-DVD

    Not every day you see Microsoft actually admit PS3 sold more. Xbox 360 has outsold PS3 as much as 2-1 every single month? My Ar$e!

    God damn microsoft, they r exactly like all the 360 fan boys. They lose but instead of admitting it, they make excuses. What are they going to say when they lose for the next couple of years?

    @6 good find

    @3 M$ is good at making excuses.

    Seems to me M$ and Bill Gate$ have been in the news a lot lately. This sounds like just a simple PR stunt to show that M$ CAN (even though they can't) be humble. They probably don't even know what the word means.

    So Micro$oft for 2 months have had hardware shortages, and that is the reason the PS3 has outsold them!  *cough* bull@% *cough*

    So I guess I will go on record and say the reason the 360 has sold more in the past is due to "shortages" of the PS3.  Oh I realize there are plenty in the stores, and I realize its wasn't very hard to find them, but if MS can do it, so can I.

    The Xbox 360 has been experiening "shortages"... right. It looks as if Microsoft is trying to do what Nintendo has been accused of doing... holding back console production just to keep demand for it high.

    Well, I can't say that I'm entirely happy because it seems as though the PS3 only outsold the Xbox 360 because of console shortages, but a win's a win.

     If the X360 outsold the PS3 every month of 2007 then how come MS said in jan 07 that they sold 10 million consoles and on Jan 08 17 million, this mean they sold 7 million on 07 while the PS3 sold 8.5 million on 07. The truth is either MS is liying now or were liying then, which ever they prefer. As of why did the PS3 outsold the X360 last month? time will tell... time will tell.

  26. zbamf

    • 5:37pm GMT - March 13th, 2008

    When 360 was outselling PS3 2:1 ws when the PS3 was selling half as what they are selling now, not because there are 360 shortages and the 360 should be selling 100% more a month. 360 numbers haven't been double what they are now month after month. Everytime sales are down both Microsoft and Nintendo blame console shortages.
