PS3's achievement system to surpass XBL's

Sony now understands the importance of online gaming to the consumer. Online gaming drives the gamers’ experience beyond the core value of the game to higher goals, thus, creating replay-value. This is why Sony is creating an innovative Home system which will push industry standards for online interactivity. What Sony has not mastered yet is an “achievements system” similar to the one available for Xbox 360 users in which gamers are awarded points for task completed in a game online or offline. Sony’s Eric Lempel believes that they have the perfect ingredient to surpass Microsoft’s achievement system in every way.

"I recognise that there are a few features that PS3 users have asked for that we haven't delivered yet. We have a lot of features in different stages of development that I think our users will be very excited about,"

"I know that an achievement system is very important to our consumers. With Home, and in addition to Home, we have some very exciting programs planned to recognize our consumers' gaming skills and loyalty in new ways that go well beyond a single score.

Howard Stringer, Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe CEO explains, "2008 will be a big year in many ways for PlayStation Network."

Perhaps the Game Developers Conference next month in San Francisco will be a haven for new information regarding this and of course, PSU will have you fully covered.

Yeahhhhh!!! 3rd AGAIN!!! whoo hooo lol i need to quit smoking, what ever happened to user content being sold through PSU did they drop that idea or are they secretly hiding this idea to surprise us with home hmmmm... i wonder n e ways Sony has to due something better or else they will be hit with  another lawsuit lol

I still hope they use some type of point system with a universal standard, point max per game...it's the only way to directly compare to others overall.

if they just do a simple achivement thing then its a copy but if they improve then it may be a good thing.

sounds good, it would be cool if we could earn points and then use those points on the playstation store to buy games, add-on's, etc.

I wasn't impressed by the achievement feature initially. I'm not really interested in point totals. If Sony makes substantial improvements, I will become more interested.

MrFenwick: it would be EVEN AWESOMER if they rewarded you with PS Store credit instead of JUST points. I always thought achievments on the 360 gave you points you could redeem for games in the marketplace, but I was wrong. This would be a cool idea I think.

    • 12:21pm GMT - January 13th, 2008

By all means its could be considered perfect but if its implementation is poor and w/out strong support from the community, then it will not surpass Live's solid position in online gaming. Sony should be able to take harsh criticism for home if it falls on some area's and listen for forumites like us on improving it in order to achieve a solid playing field with Home.

    • 12:23pm GMT - January 13th, 2008

Awww...I hate the achievements. One thing I loved about Playstation 3 is the non-existance of achievements. If they implemented achievements, then we can forever say bye-bye to great things like cheat devices from Action Replay. Ya know? Things that made the game fun, not competitive.

yeah but if they copy microsoft I have a feeling MS would try to file a lawsuit with that intact, which is something I dont want happening to sony, n e ways....

@Uncool I couldn't agree more Home really relies soley on us..." the community gamers"... we need to push our activity in this app in order for it to be a huge success and help Sony relieve any problems that we may see fit in order to get the best out off home......

Don't you agree Gingo?? where ya at man.... you've been slacking lately you usually be one out of the ten by now lol....

For mre Achievements are the worst thing about Xbox Live. Seriously once people have maxed out a game or got most of the gamer points from it they move on to the next game just to up their score. Its sad and for me has harmed the online community for XBL. I find it difficult to find people palying Halo 3 or for that matter Gears now. Meanwhile I can always get a game of R:FOM, Motorstorm etc. because people play those games online because they're still worth playing because they are FUN and they merit having people play them.

    My Idea

I think it would have been a great idea if u build a house from the games. Let's say u got Resistance 2, if u beat the game they provide you with some parts of a House. For you to get the house done, u need to buy another game where u have to beat it so u can get other parts of the house. what do u guys think?

  26. Lotus

dude l i think youve guys have posted this information at least 3 times am i wrong???

anyway  duh it will have more features thats why i laugh when people get all in a tizzy about the ps3 saying it dont have any features games blah blah blah because sony isnt the new kid on the block they know what they are doing they wouldnt try to realease a console going to stay on the market for at least the better part of a decade and not add new features games etc youve already seen a hint of the ps3s power in the first two years (resitance2, killzone)  i mean come on people these guys know what they are doing they have a plan sometimes i think people think sony is gonna try to wing it for ten years lol have a little faith and yes i know your all impaitent but you cant rush greatness simple as that if you expect them to better their competition you have to give them time

I cant wait for home! the market for ps3 is looking bright in the future.

    Sony made an excelent move

  32. Alpha2

    • 2:58pm GMT - January 13th, 2008

An over all points system is retarded. Why should I give a fiznuck what someone else scored playing 10 games I dont have? Unlockable items, extras, features, these are the only things that make any sense, I hope to god they arnt just listening to 36* achievment whores that dont realize their stupid gamer score brings NOTHING to gaming.

man. honestly i like the psn is right know who cares about achievement points useless . sony please leave achievements out ., we dont want  points.... all we want is please give us in game xmb ... that  will kill xbox360 oh and let us record while playing on out eyetoy ... i mean  the best thing about psn is lagg free community " we play games for fun not  for points ...having achievement points is a suicide !

It's obvious they can do this reasons being because they are working on it  :) and if it wasnt better then they just didnt overcome what they wanted but i know its going to probably match the xbl service or perhaps surpass it , very cool news.

I've no interest in acheivements at all. There's nothing really new about them, since 'unlockables' (which is basically all they are) have been around in games since I can't remember when.

Supposedly they're an incentive to replay the game, but I rarely bother - once I've completed the game, I'm done with it, and I can't be asked plodding through it again just to unlock something which isn't usually that impressive anyway. In fact, in almost 30 years of gaming, I can probably count on one hand the number of games I've played through more than twice. The latest is Uncharted, which is superb - I'm on my fourth time through it.

Sony does have a lot of room to growwww...And that is a good thing. If they can make alot of awsome improvments to the point systme then it would be better. They also could add tons of new feature never seen on any other console. (such as home). as far as i know the PSN is already better then XBL.

Microsoft had this crap back in 2005. What's the holdup? They had an entire year to implement this kind of stuff in 2006 and we still don't have it? That's just lazy. Microsoft may be evil, but at least they're motivated. Sony had several years to perfect this and all they have is a vague promise. Shame.
