Weekly PlayStation Portable sales in Japan have now surpassed those of the Nintendo DS, with Sony’s handheld nearly topping the 100,000 sales mark for the week ended September 16.

PSP sales rose by around 80,000 from that of the previous week, selling a total of 95,487 units. In contrast, Nintendo DS sold 79,974 units, with the Wii coming a distant third with 26,181 consoles sold.

The sales boost is largely attributed to the release of the highly anticipated Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, which sold almost 500,000 copies in its first week on sale, topping the charts in the process.

Kinda funny that it took a FF7 game to do it. Still shows you how much people dig that storyline.

That's awesome! I don't even know what part of the story FFCC is about. Hopefully this will keep up though. Now after everyone has their hands on the PSP maybe they'll see how great it is. Then they'll want the big one (PS3)!

Word!  I've got a slim PSP and it's awesome.  If you don't have one yet and want one, get one of the bundles.  It's worth it.

Let's hope Sony can keep this momentum going with the PSP.  Next in line is the PS3 outselling the Wii!

Yeh, f-ing awesome. It was due to the 77,000 PSP slim bundled with Crises core that Sony released that did it. Now that those bundle packs have been sold could these sales keep up?

Being realistic I think the sales for next week will drop slightly and continue to sell around 50-60k a week due to crises core and the psp slim. In a month i think they'll be down to around a steady 30k for a few weeks and then slowly pick up in Nov and reach 80-100k in December. The DS will reach 120k-150k in December.

I'm gonna keep track of my predictions and see how far off I am. Anyone else got any predictions?

fI'm not surprised by this at all. The PSP has a ton of wonderful features that beat out any other handheld imo. That being said I'd get one but I'm lookin at Surround Sound first

Games sell consoles not movies. Note that UMD movies didnt do this - one single game did. It also shows that listening to what customers want is a good idea. This is great news at last - could be the break weve waited for. Congratulations and thanks to Square.

Good for PSP. To me, it's by far the best handheld device up-to-date.
