The first concrete details on the third instalment in the Red Faction series have been unearthed this week, with publisher THQ announcing that the game will take the form of a third-person shooter, which aims to redefine open-ended and destruction-based gameplay.

Red Faction: Guerrilla takes place 50 years after the events of the original title, and is once again set on the planet Mars, where players will find themselves "wreaking havoc across the vast, open-world environment of Mars, from the desolate mining outpost of Parker to the gleaming EDF capital city of Eos.”

As with previous instalments, there is a firm emphasis placed the game’s fully destructible environments, as Mike Kulas, President of developer Volition, explains: "Red Faction: Guerrilla expands the signature destruction elements of the series and pushes the boundaries of next-gen gaming on a massive, terra-formed Mars where gamers can literally tear down the enemy EDF presence brick by brick.”

"With a new third- person perspective, a full cover system that allows for guerrilla style tactics and a diverse planet to explore we're excited to revitalize the gripping world of Red Faction for high-definition platforms."

The developer also revealed that the title would feature a number of multiplayer modes built specifically around the destruction aspect of the game, though it didn’t elaborate on any firm details.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is scheduled for release on PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 in THQ’s 2009 fiscal year, which runs through April 2008 – March 2009.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

I hate the fact that it isn't an FPS anymore. We'll see how it turns out.

Sound very good. Original location, big-open environments, third-person...what? Hmmm, third-person shooter. We'll see how that goes, but so far its sounding pretty good.

Kinda bs they are changing the genre. I'm curious to see if it was Volitions or THQs push to go 3rd person. I'm a big RF fan and don't want them to drive the train off the tracks like they did with the 2nd one. I am glad to hear about fully destructible environments returning. I hope the pistol and fusion rocket launcher returns.

Now it's just going to look like it's trying to directly compete with the lucas arts game with terrain deformation. Also third person and in desert-ish environments. :(

The switch from a first person shooter to a third person shooter is definitely an interesting one.  If that one decision pans out well, then I expect another great game from a great series.

I can't believe that they are turning Red Faction 3 into a 3rd person shooter. I've played the first Red Faction and I have Red Faction 2 and they were pretty good shooters.

It's been 6 years since Red Faction 2 came out in 2002, and it's been a long time since a Red Faction game, but I think that THQ made a bad mistake by changing the game from a first person shooter to a third person shooter. That's like taking Killzone 2 for the PS3 and turning it into a 3rd person shooter.... NO WAY. Some things are better to be left alone and like the old saying goes, " if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I'm kinda glad they're making it 3rd Person, for me 1st Person games are getting tired. Too many LAN parties playing Quake in high school (and later Halo when I was in college) i guess. Anyway, can't wait to see how it plays!

For crying out loud...not another  3PS game. At least developers could take the Socom route & offer 3PS & FPS in the same game. It does work and will provide a larger gamer base for them as Socom has proven.

Nice to hear they are making another RF game, but I would prefer at this point that they didn't cancel Fuel Of War.

lets hope they do better with the AI this time ;)

The DEmo is centered around destroying things. Which is cool.

Problem,  the demo was so heavy on just destroying the building that it became more of a walk along, blow up the building game. Got boring and stale. The graphics where not that good and the 3rd person looked and felt cheap. Bad Company did the same thing you had to blow every yellow building then the blu than the yellow again...

Having a gun as the extention of your hand would have been better.

REview score for Red Faction Guerilla is 6.4.
