Reeves: Shoddy hardware hurts the market

It seems all of the punches are taking place in Europe/PAL territories between Sony and Microsoft. SCEE President, David Reeves, is looking to go the distance in this bout and continues to throw down the gloves against an obviously easy target in the hardware reliability department.
Speaking with MCV, Reeves claimed that selling shoddy hardware would not help the market grow. Considering the extremely low failure rate for PlayStation 3s, and the lack of any negative news from the Nintendo camp, this comment can only be directed at one console company within the market, Microsoft.
"... Another thing we have committed to for supporting market growth is putting out quality hardware - you don't grow the market by putting out shoddy machines," he said. "So we try to make sure that PS3s have a failure rate of just two to three percent, which is very low by industry standards."
Sadly, this is the type of thing that helps fan and fuel the console war within forums and message boards around the net.
"On the competition, I will say Nintendo have only done good things. They have expanded geographically and dramatically extended demographically. They have never been afraid to try new products, be that hardware, or software or peripherals.
"For Microsoft, again, I can understand that, again, they have put money into the market and have initiated growth. In some ways what they have done is brought forward consumers from next year into this year.
"By bringing the price down they are trying to establish themselves quickly, as they did with the first Xbox. But they have built online in a meaningful way and the competition they have brought to the market place is great."
It's always entertaining to watch a cheap shot be taken low and hard, only to follow it up with a compliment as though everything is rosy on the business side of things. It's kind of like telling your best friend, "I'm great at this game man, but don't worry, you're pretty good too."
Do you think comments like this are something negatively affecting the consumer and your favorite forums?

I have to say its about time somebody from Sony toke some shots back at Microsoft. the months leading up to these holiday months everybody from Microsoft pass and present had something to say about PS3 and Sony. "My question is what toke them so long to do so"

It is not a cheap shot if it is true. Microsoft made horrible machines... and continues to make bad ones. If not for the fact that they had a year head-start to market, they would be the laughing stock of the console war.

You didn't have any problem with Microsoft taking cheap shots at home, not complimenting Sony's high hardware reliability, their superior headset and online play with dedicated servers (which is what you'd expect in the paid online service)... sometimes I wonder what this site's intentions are.

I think that the PS3 should be winning the console war easily with the hardware, blu-ray advantages, and simply the Sony following, yet we're not winning the console war, and its discouraging, the only thing I can attribute it too is the price of the PS3, when parents go into a retail store, and see a sub-200 dollar system available on the shelf, compared to a 400 dollar system, they clearly will make the clear-cut decision, no matter the hardware reliability, simply because of the present economy, I don't condone Sony lowering the price of the PS3 if it results in major losses overall, but something has to happen to even the playing field, because great games like LBP and R2, selling the #'s it has is a direct result of the user-base #'s...period, if Reeves would spend his time finding a way to increase the user-base rather than taking cheap shots, then he wouldn't need to take cheap shots IMO...responses welcome!

@ 2.
dude i totally agree with you. Microsoft has and still is making horrible Xbox 360 consoles. the thing that gets to me is before launch they knew that the system had a lot of failures and yet they still pushed it out. why would i spend money on a console from a company that didnt care if their product worked or not. and did not care to tell their fateful fans about the consoles problems. **** you microsoft. SONY ALL THE WAY!!!

Shoddy, delayed, half baked software hurts the market too...Sony. The mudslinging goes both ways and to be honest, I'm not sure if ANYONE has truly delivered a next gen experience yet. Maybe someone will raise the bar in 2009.

I loved my 360 but got rid of it because it was junk! The first one I had bought failed after a software update then the next one that came back from xbox repair was not fixed so I sent it back again (pathetic) then I got the third one which lasted about less than a year and it got the RROD after that I said F IT! I got a PS3 and I use it every day! I got some Blu Ray movies and it has been a fun reliable system and in the next few months I am gonna get more games and accessories for it! I hope long term that Sony crushes Microsoft!!!

its kinda funny as me and my work friends have been talkin about this topic lately also, a colleague of mine wanted a next gen console and as there were more 360 lovers at my work he went with the 360... he's been through 3 consoles in less than 2 months and has now decided to finally take my advice and pay out on the ps3, i'm quite upset that so many companies were porting games from 360 to ps3 instead of taking the initiative to try it for ps3 and port to 360, they did it with farcry 2 and ubisoft admittedly say that its better on the ps3 graphically (plus it doesn't crash like the 360 version lol) as it doesn't have the 360's limitations. Personally i think microsoft should scrap 360 soon and make a console that is actually reliable, 360 owners deserve that much atleast, and sony need to really start to focus on giving EU/UK a little more as they seem to screw us over way too much, also they could try and give us the home options that the US and Japan have seeing as everyone seems to have more of everything than the EU/UK its quite pathetic... seeing as i'm sure home was being developed by Sony London....¬_¬

I think what this guy is saying is so true. The thing I don't understand is how people are still buying 360s even though there's been a high failure rate.Maybe most of them don't know about it. And I think it's about time that Sony starts taking shots at Microsoft. If Microsh1t can do it why not Sony

I don't see that as a dig, but because of the way the media seem to be highlighting it, thats how many are going to take it.
Try and look at it as a promotion for the PS3 & not a slating of any competition.
I mean...take 2 more seconds to think about it...longer if need be. What good is coming out with a slating like that going to do? Its far too late to promote the PS3 in reference to the 360 failures. That should have been done when it initially happened, but SONY refrained from those tactics & good on them.
This is just promoting the PS3 as a high quality product, everything else is just coincidence. If 360 failure rates were within norms, then Im sure this statement would remain unchanged.

I will say the newer 360's are much better built. Mine I've had for one year now with no issues. However, I got my PS3 on launch day and still haven't had a single issue to date. Which one will fail first? Only time will tell.

I have always had good luck with consoles, My ps2 did crash because I way over used it as a dvd player. My 360 never had a problem until rrod 1 year and 10 months into its cycle. I have had many friends that were at least on the 3rd 360 some as high as 7. I have not had any troubles with it since but the only game I play on it is ninja gaiden 2. I do love my 2 ps3's much more than my 360 and wii. I hate wii's software line up this year, the best wii games are japanese release and I had to by a free loader to play them( wii is not region free).
Ps3 plays these awesome movies that come in a blue dvd package, visually stunning. Also I can turn my ps3 on with my psp and stream bootleg movies that are anywhere on my network and also activate my playstation eye to see whats going on in my bedroom and spy on my girlfriend through the psp.
If I had to buy a third ps3 just to play metal gear solid 4, I would do it in a heartbeat. I am happy to own all video game consoles that are currently sold at retail in north america and this post is long and boring so I'll end it with "the majority of xbox360 fanboys are douch* sacks and don't even know what the ps3 is capable of. We cant all afford a lexus or a bmw or ps3. But we shouldn't dump on sony when our kia optima breaks down on the way to pick up the 360 from the repair shop.

Reeves mentions though...
That ps3 is ahead of 360's install base 300.000 in PAL territories!
This proves that journalism in America only cares about America... Cause 360 has 16 months lead in Europe and losing there as well as in the Japan...But ps3 is doomed eh?I expect your comments in 2009 Xmas for which console is doomed... -

Kudos to Reeves. Anyone who owns a PC knows what a disappointment M$ has been for years. The Xbx360 is the same. RROD really sucks and M$ is just fortunate to have had the money on their side to extend warranty, but now that it is over and the economy is tanking who is going to want their xbx to fail and end up spending money to get it fixed.
PS3 is definitely recession proof.

You know though this is the main reason i stick with Sony, is because of the hardware. I'm still on my first PSX, not PSONE, but the first generation Playstation (well maybe not the first but the ones just after they started makin the RF cables like they do today which ive had for 10 years), my first PS2, my first PSP and my first PS3.....all running like brand spankin new. I've never had to even once have them be sent in for repairs. If I find products that are that reliable your damn right im gonna stick with em . Sony knows how to make reliable products unlike microsoft who, just like with Vista, always try to push unfinished broken, hardly usable crap out the door...I'll admit I hate Microsoft...but not because of PS3. I've always hated them ever since Windows ME, they are the most money hungry greedy pieces of crap to ever step foot on this planet. They will lie cheat and steal anyway they can to just get more money. They don't see people as consumers...they see them as $$$$.

IMO Sony needs to do some negative advertising on the 360's failure rates. I don't think these parents who are buying 360's for their children have any idea that the 360 has a 16%-33% failure rate. It might make people think twice about giving MS their business.

Who is willing to put up 200 dollars for the scrapBox? They must not be smart people that's for sure.
It must be lesser informed people that put money in Microsofts pockets by buying the scrapBox, and it has to stop.
It is ridiculous, really.... Now I will go and cry myself to sleep over this stupidity.

Never had a problem with any PS console, any Sega console or any Nintendo console (when I supported them).Never owned or ever will own a MS console so it's safe to say that I will never have to worry about defective hardware.I only support quality products, both hardware and software.Which is why I only own a PS3 and still have the phat PS2 from 2001.

Considering all the crap that pours out of the mouths of the Brand-X camp this type of passive agressive attack should have been expected eventually. Though really he IS right. People STILL complain about the Ring and Sony and Nintendo have virtualy perfect machines. Of course it's more impressive for Sony since their machine is a lot more complicated.

Personally Microsoft should be dragged over the coals for selling faulty equipment BUT I think that Sony is not in a position to judge and that their comment is a bit rich coming from Sony. It's the pot calling the kettle black.
Sony PS1 systems where known for poor build quality and high failures, PS2 was even more notourious particularly with the DVD laser, and drive mech itself and PS2 models had problems with faulty power supplies. Worst still - Sony kept denying this until they lost two court class actions one involving hundreds of thousands of registered claimants. In 2005 Sony was forced to recal some 1.1 million power adapters for PS2 after admitting that they had been aware that the adapters where dangerous for more than two months but failed to act until forced too by regulators.
Sony has since gone on to loose court rulings including the nasty exploding battery problems systemic across the whole product line, costing laptop industry almost a billion dollars in damages. Sony have had massive failures with certain cybershot cameras, and only 8 weeks ago was forced to recall Sony Viao TZ series laptops prone to catching fire.... Sony was ranked 15 places behind Korean LG for reliability in consumer electronics and came third last for customer service.
In contrast Nintendo have a wonderful reputation for quality construction and low counts of defects, and bug free. This is not a plug for Nintendo - So far PS3 seems quite reliable and that is good but its innapropriate for Sony to point fingers on poor quality when they have a horrid track record in this area.

No one I knew ever had a problem with the PS1 or PS2.never heard of any law suites either.Got a link? The PS2 does not use power adaptors to begin with, unless that was another model that never released int he states. It uses a regular cord.Anyway,we are talking about video game consoles. It is what it is,the 360 is unreliable and the PS3 is,just excpet it and move on.HAHA@ having to make up stuff about the PS1 being defective. My bother still has is original launch PS1 while his 360 broke once already.

well, the worst park about this is that microsoft knows this and they rather focus on "key" elements to win a video game war like software and dev kits than the hardware it self. you'll see what sony will do for the next gen, they will learn from this gen big time

I had an xbox 360 and let me tell you the hardware is garbage. It broke 2 weeks in and then i got it back a month later for it only to break with in 2 days. I remeber watching Rainbow Six Vegas freezing all the time on the xbox and im not talking online. Yet it worked fine on my ps3 and never froze one. Luckily when i took the xbox to trade it. It worked long enough when they tested it. I took 120 dollar loss and went back to Sony and i am so glad i did. The worst part is that when peoples xboxes crash they buy more and then it is looked as a new sale for the xbox yet it is not at all. Mark my words their installed base isnt as high as they claim due to people being on their second and third unit or people who just dont get a new one at all. Also pirating will hurt microsoft bad people are modding that thing left and right and microsoft will be forced to release a new system just to curb the pirating. PS3 will be here way longer think about how long the DVD formatt lasted Blu Ray isnt going away and neither is the PS3.

I have about fifteen friends with ps3's that have never even heard of anyone having a problem with a ps3. My brother fried his hard drive by turning off system while disregarding the on screen warning not to. He got a new hard drive and then he was good. And a guy I work with had the power unplugged by his 2 year son while playing a game. System stopped working but sony repaired or replaced. My 60gb purchased at launch has since had yellow dog linux installed and then a 320gb hdd installed, not a single problem with the ps3 it hasn't even blinked funny. Actually I take that back my ps3 did assimilate all of my other consoles in an attempt to restart skynet and initiate the uprising of the machines.

Just like the old phrase. "You get what you pay for". I have the orginal Launch 60gb PS3, which I paid $600 for, My Co-workers told me that I was crazy for spending that much money for a PS3 when I can get an 360 for less. Now at the Present time Im still on my first PS3 and my Co-Workers are on there 5th to 6th 360. Who is crazy now? Oh by the way, They all bought the HD DVD attachment and I told them that the Blu-Ray was better and will win the HD DVD war. I guess my $600 investment paid off.
