Resident Evil 5 ditches typewriter save system

Posted on October 4th, 2008 at 05:50 EDT

Resident Evil 5 head honcho Jun Takeuchi has confirmed that the Survival Horror sequel will no longer employ the series infamous typewriter save system.

Speaking to 1up.com, Takeuchi confirmed that the game would instead utilize a checkpoint/chapter system similar to the one seen in Resident Evil 4.

"Actually, I really like typewriters; they're really typical of the Resident Evil series," said Takeuchi. "But this time, the save system will be a combination of checkpoints and chapters."

Typewriters have become a staple of the Resident Evil series (among many other things) since their inclusion in original PlayStation classic back in 1996, and required the player to use them in conjunction with ink ribbons in order to save their progress.

Elsewhere in the interview, Takeuchi humorously remarked on the idea of including Akuma (famous for an EGM Resident Evil 2 April Fools joke) in a Resident Evil title: "That's a pretty good idea," he said, "Maybe we can make something out of that."

Stay tuned for more Resident Evil 5 news from the Tokyo Game Show next week.

It;s a shame, although this does look superb, capcom should've started a new franchise / ip with Res4 and now this. They are just so far from what made the original games what they were. I'm still buying it tho lol.

I agree, Resi 4 was one of the best games ever, but sooo far away from real Resi games. I agree with making the zombies faster (ala 28 days later) but the Las Plagas thing should've been incorporated into a new ip.

Did anyone see the original video for Resi 4 with the ghosts?, that looked quite good, although also not really in with the Resi format.

Good.  I'm playing Silent Hill 5 right now and although it's very good, the save points are too few and far between and it's annoying that the game holds me captive, playing longer than I want to, just to find a save point and quit.

@Odium_Generis_Humani - Thats why its so important to carefully plan the game save points! Its in those time when we need to hurry to get to a check point in order to quit a game, that the fun becomes suffering! Or even worse, when u quit a 2 hour playtrough because you couldnt find a save point and then u have to do it all over again!

If the typewritter is being replaced by another save system its because it wouldn´t make sense finding a typewritter in the middle on an African savannah! Would it?! XD That would make saves a lot more far apart from each other! The new way will fix this i believe.

I think it's a shame that they are getting rid of all the iconic items from resident evil games,  they may as well start a new franchise, wait... that's what they are doing!

I for one like the new direction, the old RE games were fun but I simply could not wrap my mind around controlling a human being with a system that makes him/her behave as if he was a tank from an old NES game. Typewriters can be replaced with no detriment to the game IMO. The only thing that I will say against this issue is that, yes, with the advent of newer quickers zombies it does put forth less of a survival/horror atmosphere than it does an action/horror atmosphere. Hopefully they solved this problem already, it actually isn't hard, few here will recall but the First Person Survival Horror game Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth solved this issue nicely.

not a big deal, just for the best....but from playing RE4 and other past RE titles, typewriters were unique though, I gotta say. But when will we see I-want-to-eat-human-zombies again? lol.

I would like them to return to the old format and may'be in a future game revisit the mansion out of Resi 1 for a small portion of the game.

In RE 5, you should be able to save whenever you want. As long as you are safe, you pull out the iPhone or something and that is the way to save the game. That would be pretty cool.

For some reason, im not really hyped about this game ... I am fully aware that RE4 was one of the best games i`ve ever played but a sequel should be a lil bit different. I hate the fact that the engine of RE5 is so similar, if not the same. And also, when the first trailer was released i liked the fact that the zombies looked as fast as the ones in left 4 dead, but now i see that they are just as slow as RE4 ...

Ill will definitely purchase it when its released but i was expecting more i guess ...

saving the game whenever you want is the sh i t! like in Oblivion, but that would make it even futher from the survival horror mood.... I say we can safely have sub-genres in survival horror. Now the differences are clear.... SH and RE
