Sony: "plenty of space" in market for competition

Speaking to Videogamer (among many others) at the London Games Festival's Gamer 3.0 Conference yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Vice President Jamie MacDonald has insisted his employer is "incredibly well positioned" in the social gaming space.
"I wouldn't say we fell behind," he said. "SingStar and Buzz and EyeToy are still hugely successful."
MacDonald adopted a conciliatory approach to the success of Sony's competitors. "I personally am really pleased to see the success of Wii Sports and Wii Play and Guitar Hero and Rock Band in a sense that it's expanding the market for everybody and it's expanding the appeal of video games."
But he went on to assert PlayStation's strengths as (arguably) the first brand to target the more casual, out-going breed of consumer currently embraced by Nintendo's Wii. "I think we're incredibly well positioned [to take advantage of social gaming] in the sense that we kind of, it would be a bit arrogant of me to say we invented, but we were an early pioneer certainly and we continue to be very successful in that space."
MacDonald claimed that Sony could recapture this social gaming space, pointing to the PS3's media hub functionality and key upcoming releases. "I think with things like LittleBigPlanet, with PlayStation Home, with the continuing success of SingStar and Buzz! on PS3 and the things that we've done to the experiences that take advantage of the connectivity of the PS3, the rich media capabilities, I think personally we're very well placed."
He concluded with further, slightly backhanded praise for Microsoft and Nintendo. "I can't speak at all about their strategy. But they've been very successful with social titles which, how can I put this, owe quite a lot to what had gone before."
"But they have done it in a very special way and really well and have been very successful. And I think there's absolutely plenty of space in the marketplace for Nintendo and ourselves and Microsoft."

All the hype with the Wii will soon die out, its easy to get bored after playing 3 hours straight, the PS3 has everything you could possibly need!! Now it needs a firmware update for the abilitly to make coffee ;).

Are Sony losing it? They think that they can just continue to operate as they have for the past 15 years and everyone will just jump on board. I really want the PS3 to be as succesful as the PS2 but the way Sony are going, I can't see it. Sony need to really pull something out of the bag to get in front. The price needs to come down.
I've even caught myself (an avid PS fan) looking at the Eggbox ads on Amazon etc - Damn you MS with your low price and better mulit-format games.

His responses are legit. Sony is market leader and innovator that promotes competition because they know that it pushes the industry as a whole forward. The only company that you will hear spew rhetoric remarks is Microsoft because they could careless about the electronics entertainment industry. -

I'm a Sony Fan to the fullest the PS3 would do well but on the other hand developers are just understanding how this system works and what would dominate is the PS4 because it utilizes the same technology and developers would already have complete understanding.

Yeah keep saying there is plently of room. In case you havent noticed Macdonald, the Xbox dosent feel the same way. They want to crush the PS3 and push them out of the market. Sony, MS is trying to GET RID OF YOU! THEY DONT WANT THE COMPETITION. Example is RB2, and many other console exclusives, and timed exclusives.

@13 Amen, everything I hear from Sony is nicey nicey talk, why don't they throw down? M$ isn't pulling any punches this gen, granted they rely in misinformation, bribes, outright lies, and dressed up failures (despite reviews people are not happy about Fable II) So whats the deal? Where are the ads and tough truth talking Sony Soldiers, why did they leave both the defense and offense to us fanboys?

wow solway you are ridiculous, the only reason kz2 is not out NOW is because it would be idiotic to have 2 of your own shooters competing. Sony doesnt want to compete with themselves (KZ2/resistance 2). People forget that casual gamers will see value in the ps3 being a bluray player aswell as a game console do you want to by a 200 dollar wii AND a 300 dollar blu ray player (which will have to be bought eventually, and will be even MORE appealing this holiday because of hdtvs dropping to crazy low prices) or would you rather get everything you need in one nice neat package for 100 bucks less?
sony has more than the titles he listed that would appeal to casual/social gamers, look at all of the awesome party games on psn (fat princess, calling all cars, crash commando, are a few off of the top of my head) it's not like he can list 20 titles right there. and wii is on sort of a slippery slope as it is people that own one aren't really happy that alls they have gotten since inception is party games and shovelware. i seen that was the direction nintendo was going in long ago and sold my wii. I was really excited at first i thought they were going to bring gaming to a larger market AND improve the "hardcore" gaming experience throught their motion control, but it was obvious that they had no reason to expand harcore gaming when people were dropping 250 bucks on a wii just for wii sports anyway. wii will probably still do well this holiday but intrest is dropping because the software isnt really holding up.
sony just needs to market the ps3 more aggresively that is the key to getting more sales right now. why are do you guys feel the need to defend against idiotic fanboys? we have the better games, we have more exclusives (look at our lineup), we have a robust online service that we dont have to pay for, and not only do we have more powerful hardware but we have more reliable hardware. If you see that all the fanboys can throw at ps3 are lies, FUD, false rhetoric, and hugely exaggerated notions why does it matter, if i fanboy tries to start arguing which is the better system i simply laugh in his face. The ps3 doesnt need any defending, it speaks for itself.
The same goes for Sony, they have no need to bash, trash talk, and lie about their competition. The only thing that does is make them look threatened (which is what MS looks like right now) which they really aren't. Regardless of what happens sony isn't going anywhere theres absolutely no way they will be pushed out of the market. they make a good bulk of the best games in the industry and are too well established to be bullied. Yeah MS my pay the bill for a timed exclusive here and there or a little dlc but i personally could wait a month or two extra for a third party title when theres all of sonys first party games to be had on ps3.

@#3 Ask your xbox fanboys how many first party exclusives is microsoft putting out. And then give them this list about Sony. RFOM, Motorstorm, Siren, DC Universe Online, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, God Of War 3, Motorstorm 2: Pacific Rift, Socom, M.A.G. (Massive action Game). Little Big Planet, MLB 09. enough said.
