Sony announces 40GB PS3 and UK price cut

Sony Computer Entertainment UK has officially unveiled the long-rumoured 40GB PlayStation 3 console, also cutting the price of the 60GB version from GBP 425 – 349.
Effective October 10, the 40GB SKU will retail for approximately GBP 299 and contains a 40GB hard drive and two USB ports; however, the cheaper model eliminates necessary emulation software pertaining to PlayStation 2 titles, along with the multi-memory card slot.
The 60GB version, meanwhile, will contain two first-party titles and a single Sixaxis controller for the reduced price of GBP 349.
Sony commented that it felt such a move was necessary after considering "feedback from thousands of existing PS3 owners as well as research into future potential PS3 owners.”
SCEUK Managing Director Ray Maguire commented: "As we approach our first PlayStation Christmas, it is satisfying to be able to offer UK consumers the choice of two PlayStation 3 packages both now representing remarkable value.”
"We have a brand new 40 GB machine that represents an excellent entry point into the world of high definition games and movies, and we have the fully featured 60GB machine being offered with two next-generation gaming experiences at a highly competitive price."
"The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next-generation PS3 owners”, added David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

I Bet allot off mainstream people will get confused with wish ps3 systeem can play ps2 and ps1 games! Why dit the 40 Gb lose the abiltity for backward compatibility, Arent the firmwire's for the ps3 all the same to emulate the games? I bet this will backfire at Sony when people buy the console and dident now about this little thing. Anyhow: for a gamer that is only interested in next-gen games this is a great startpackage, but personaly i would go for the full option!!!

This is good for the UK. Now we are waiting to hear about the US market. As long as they get games before XMAS, things should be good for Sony.

Well there you have it people, you can now get a cheaper ps3, so go out and get it. BC is not a big deal, becuase if you have ps2 games, you must have a ps2, think about it, you now have a cheap bluray player and the best game machine ever created. the ps3 is made to play ps3 games, not ps2 games. (ps2 for ps2, ps3 for ps3.) I rest my case.

You have to be really cheap to buy the 40gb model.... i mean the 60gb is slightly more expensive and has emulation and more usbports and cardreader more bigger harddrive two games and one more controller... Are people really that stupid that they are just watching the pricetag and not what they are getting ? They should put ps3 logo on the old ps2 models and sell it for 250.... those machines would sell like cure for cancer.....

I think many people woudnt mind paying 600 for ps3 if they knew what it does and if they see the list of games coming for it this winter. But sadly sony just keeps on making some strange abstract advertisements that tell consumers nothing more than dont go to strange hotels or you get your money blown up by grenades...

the UK is getting screwed

lol, I would be up for this. I don't need the BC because I never sold my PS2. I spent $600 but I don't mind being an early adopter. This is a great deal for those who aren't going to use BC.

Am I the only one that sees a problem with losing the backwards capability? Why is Sony bent on creating the most bad pub on the planet? Nary a year ago most everyone here was bashing the BC problems on the 360. Now look where we are. Sony has put itself in a position where it's become a good game for bloggers, Tycho and many media outlets to bash on Sony. While this is an attractive pricepoint, the lack of a SOFTWARE BC makes no sense. I jumped early for a great system, It's an fracking great system, but why does Sony try so bleeping hard to give us crappy news with great news.

I can see people buying the 40gb and getting mad because they won't be able to play PS2 games. Hopefully (and I'm sure it will happen) there will be some update to fix that. If not oh well. That's what the PS2 is for, to play PS2 games. Sony (and it's customers) need to realize that you can't please everyone! Now how about the US? Backlash will surely come from here without the BC.

Sony should back this SKU up,for selling the 60gb,because if they keep the price difference small, then people will go in the store thinking they'll pick the new cheap model, but after they learn about the pricing they'll get the high end SKU,feeling that they got the BEST possible choice. So everybody wins

wiscfan23 - I'm with ya. I mean its software BC, you can't tell me it ADDS to the price of the unit. I mean its already there! The 40G SKU would of been awesome sans the memory ports and even reduced USB and the removeal of EE and GS replaced with emulation. I know I wouldn't purchase a PS3 without BC cause of all the titles I own. Sure I got a PS2 but why hook it up. I mean the one of the big things the PS3 has going for it is BC! Ahh well

"299 GBP = 600 dollars the UK is getting screwed"
In Sweden, the 60GB SKU with Motorstorm, RFOM and two controllers, costs 5999 swedish kronor right now! Thats 920$/ 450GBP! Whos really getting screwed here? -

If thats true, and Sony eliminated the BC for PS2 games, I may just sell my PS3. That has to be the single most idiotic thing they could have done. Who the h3ll would buy that piece of sh!t console. This will tank worse than the 20GB version. Its a disapointing day for Sony. They have really p!ssed off a very loyal customer. This wont help sales at all. If anything it will create a ton of p!ssed off people and returns. I hate to say it, but with this idiocy at Sony running rampant, we may just have the next DC on our hands.

The "BC" seems to be software assisted not fully emulated by it. The first models that had the full support had cpu+gpu from ps2. Then when they started using software emulation they dropped cpu out but still had gpu left. And now they drop out the gpu to cut the price but at the sametime that cuts off the possibility for using software emulation. Thats how i understanded the deal...

Daz:
1. If you've already bought a PS3, then you still have the backwards compatibility.
2. If you buy a PS3, the 60/80GB one, you will still have the backwards compatibility.
3. If you buy a 40GB PS3, that means you're buying it JUST FOR THE PS3 FUNCTIONALITY. Meaning to play only PS3 games, Blu-Ray Movies, everything else the PS3 does... except play PS2 games.
If you still want backwards compatibility, you still have it. If you want to buy a PS3 for cheap because you have a PS2 to play your old games, and you don't want to cough up more than you are willing to pay, then the 40GB is a great business decision.

And hey what are most people crying. First sony offers solid pack for really good value, then peole whine "its too expensive im too poor to buy that". Ok sony listens to the majority of the bums out there and shaves off some stuff from the product. Now people have cheaper system and what do you know, people start crying "i want all the old stuff back!". Seems people woudnt be happy even if ps3 was free, then they would start whining that there must be something wrong with the console because they are giving it away for free.... really it shame when people forget that they have brains... or then most people just dont have any because they are so stupid....

While Sont now is recieving the competitive edge of regaining their hold in the UK, I am still iffy as to whether any further action will be taken to make sure their is BC on the 40gig version. :( Either way its a great bang for the buck if you ask me.

It doesnt affect me until the PS3 flops because its still too expensive. This is the same as the 20GB version but with wi-fi, and lacking BC. It wont sell well. There are too many PS2 owners that still want to play there games. I know I wouldnt want to have to get a different controller out everytime I want to play a PS2 game. I have enough crap lying around. In a couple of years or so, I would say it doesnt matter, but companies are still making PS2 games, and some of the recent ones are very good games. Until there counterparts are out on the PS3, I want to play the PS2 versions. And I am sure most people feel the same way. They should have been working on full software BC before they went this route

As long as it stays in the UK I'll feel a little better about it. It'll see in the UK where they've all been complaining about the price but here it'll just sit on the shelves and rot.
Some people might still have PS2's but chances are otherpeople traded in their systems for credit off a new PS3. Thus they dont have their old systems. Or even if they DO still have their old systems who wants to waste the time hooking it up to an HDtv? The PS3 is even designed to upconvert the image of a PS2 game for an HD screen You cant do that with a PS2!
No one in the US wants this version.

Good decision Sony! This will really strengthen their position in the console war and improve sales, but most importantly i will be able to buy my new 60GB PS3 for £100 cheaper with all the same features! its gonna b a good year(s) for the ps3 :D The 40GB no-backwards compatibility may be a problem for ps2 game fans, but for new 'next-gen gamers' that won't be a problem i suppose.

The price cuts will not boost sales as much as you think... Christmas buying will be responsible for that. As for beating the 360... forget about it! With Mass Effect, Halo3, Bioshock, PGR4, and Rock Band just to name a few, the 360 will be the number one selling platform this Christmas. Say all you want, but I'll be back after Christmas to say I told you so.
