Speaking in light of The NPD Group’s latest hardware figures for July, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) CEO and President Jack Tretton has revealed that year-to-date hardware sales of the PlayStation 3 have grown by a total of 99 per cent.

The company’s flagship gaming console outsold Microsoft Corp’s Xbox 360 for yet another month in the U.S, clocking up sales of 224,900, with over 1.8 million PS3 units sold in the territory from January to July 2008.

“Our year-to-date sales growth of 99% for the PS3 reaffirms that consumers are indeed embracing PS3 as their entertainment hub-of-choice with its feature-rich offerings like Blu-ray and our recently announced video delivery service," said Tretton.

"With an unmatched software line-up that includes LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2 and MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and the anticipated launch of our new 80GB PS3 model, we're confident in a strong second half of the year and look forward to quickly addressing any inventory shortages due to the transition."

True.  The thing about Americans is (for some reason) we can't look at the big picture like people in other parts of the world.  All we know is what we want right now.  What's affecting us right now.  Americans looked at the PS3's price and only new it was too high right now (well, back then).  We didn't care to find out why Sony thought the 60GB was worth $600.  Even the early adopters felt like they were getting the PS3 on loyalty and FAITH.  Not because they were convinced it was the best.  Ever hear someone say (especially in arguments about Blu-Ray back then) that "...it's about games, games, games!"?  Translation:  "What can this do for me right now?!"  Americans don't do "potential", we do "now".  Well, "now" is here (EDIT: almost).  People are getting PS3's because of games (like SOCOM), and now they're raving to us early adopters about everything like free online, remote play, the web browser (for a while), blu-rays, Qore, and no doubt (but later) Home...as if they didn't know the PS3 had those things.  Maybe they didn't know.  They were too busy talking about lack of games as if they were never coming.

By the way, that Holiday line-up is amazing.  I can't Wait for SOCOM!

also that 1.8 was only half a year of sales, thats an average of 300000 a month, so i wouldn't say it's so bad

I agree for the most part, though I dont fall into that group (I bought a PS3 at launch and didnt buy a game for 6 months,  I bought my PS3 solely to support a company and platform that I know will be great.).

What I dont agree with is that the "now" is here.  There is still some big holes in the PS3 game lineup (my kingdom for a good JRPG), we are getting much closer, but I dont think we have made it yet.

I knew from the beggining it was only a matter of time before the PS3 starting flexing its muscle. Now that Sony is flexing people are reacting in a good way.

The PS3 will sell around 5-6 million consoles this year in NA(sells much better in the holiday season), if you add 5million for Europe and 2million for Japan that's around 12-13million. And it will only get better next year with titles like FF13(will make the PS3 sell better in Japan), GoW3, GT5, Killzone2, ...etc. A price drop next year or this holiday season would really help too.

no it's not that. it's Americans trying to get evrything cheap at other people expense that's basicly ur history and why ur the riches country in the world in aus Nintendo wii cost a good 400 bucks but that's how much you pay for a ps3 also the games cost like double here too but still u want it cheaper i reckon it's cheap enough over there don't u. every ps3 in america cost to make is about $650 and ur paying $400 i got my ps3 for $700, sony losin $250 for each console sold man. so in short i reckon they need to cut prices in PAL regions who agrees with me?

I see your point and agree.  So I edited my post to reflect that.

    @8

I think they need a price cut everywhere!  But in Sony's defense, it slightly outsells the X360 at a higher price point, which has to mean people are getting the message about what it does.   Sony is not content on people assuming it's just for cutting edge video games, period.  I think people need to accept that.  You know how MS blew all that money with the 1st Xbox just to get their foot in the door of a new market?  That's what Sony's doing.  Think about it.  That's why it was NEVER an option for Sony to take the BluRay out of the PS3.  I think they may have been better off making a "set-top everything box" and Playstation game console seperately, and then combine the two in what we now recognize as the PS3 later on.  I think things would have been less shaky (but they probably would have lost the HD disc war, though).

yeah 1,8 mill is rubbish in America but they are all probably rooting for Microsoft because it's an American company, similar to Wii and Sony consoles in Japan. In my opinion these 'Patriots' if there's any other way of putting it are very petty and shallow, I'm from the UK and I think the place is trash and I would probably think that about other countries too if I lived/visited there.

When ever they talk about how much money they made makes me upset. Because i'm spending my money and at times its just to hold me off until another good game comes out. They are driving my crazy because when you talk that lets me know your not working and you not focus on with need to be done like making the damn games. They so busy looking at charts while the pieces of games sit in the back grounds not being work on. Its cool that the systems are now starting to roll out, but I don't care. Every time they talk about the line up its the same one that theyed talk about for the past life spand of the ps3. I swear every week there is someone different talking about the numbers at sony. Im ready to push my system now, its about time that it get push.

psn id: I95SOUTH<-- Get back to work and stop  running your mouth, you show so much game play that I swear that some of the games release dates can be push up.

Hit the road jack ... and don't you come back ... no more, no more no more no more... annd so on.

He totally missed KZ2 which has to be the most eagerly awaited title for FPS players.  Screw resistance with it's lame altered history and Ted's never-ending I love Sony tirade killed that with the original RFOM.

Jack, know your audience.  We are serious gamers .. if we weren't we'd buy a Wii.  Your sales figures don't impress us.  PS3 should have been way ahead of all the other consoles by now, but continual PR blunders and a lack of equality across the regions has left us bemused.  As for the Magic Shuhei ... well don't expect any rabbits from his hat.  He obviously has no idea what he is doing.  Ok I'm done.

Wow, 1.8 million in 6 months! Thats amazing. Sony is going to win this war, they have the top of the line console, but people don't realize it. Once a game that utilizes all of the PS3's power comes out, people will look back on buying a 360 and say " what was I doing?".

umm just for you non american people to know america is on it's a** right now unemployment is extremely high we need to recover which we slowly are and as a result we just aren't spending because we don't know if we'll have a job tomorrow (most of us) so 1.8 million at this time is pretty good.

I bought The PS3 at Launch because I knew three things, #1. I knew the Blu-Ray would win the HD DVD war, #2. Paying $1000 for a Blu-Ray#player or buy a PS3 for $600. and #3. Looking at the PS3 specs before it was release i knew the PS3 was ahead of its time and know that time is here, people are regreting not buying one sooner.

Can we stop the american non american jiberish!?! Every region obviously has it's issuse as far as the PS3 goes. It would be nice if Sony did a little of what M$ is doing. Throw some money at the devs to keep them from making exclusives cross platformers. That would help at least a little bit, agreed???

Whats up with Sony haters wasting their lives and our time by coming and posting on a site with the word Playstation (not XBox) in it? Scared of the Competition? Got a curious streak (you want one) but you resist its ability cause you'd rather have a faulty system and a company who nickles and dimes you? Seriously I would never be loyal to any thing that has or had a failure rate of 33%. I've heard all the comparisons trust me (yeah but sony this... & sony that....) Would you rather have a mercedes that breaks down all the time with reliability worse than chrysler or have a high end Lexus that out performs for the whole time you own the car? ( I can hear all the xbox fans right now ...yeah but Live! yeah but gow -really stands for God of War :) yeah but i dont really want a blue ray player I love my crappy DVD player on my Crappy TV. Yeah but xbox is cheaper -unless you figure all the add ons required to equal the PS3 i.e. wi fi / $100, Battery charger, seperate DVD upscaler, Seperate blue ray player, oh and all the warranties you have to rebuy every time the system breaks! Yeah I'm going on and on because I'm sick of the stupidity. P.S. if you're an xbox fan dont bother replying its not worth taking all the time you need to come up with something. I'll tell you now so you dont have to wonder. Seems someone should be telling you how to think instead of your current daddy Micro$oft. (micro means small soft means well you're soft) Stop taking it!!

$ony is not losing money at all. check their profit statement. And if they did lose money on console sales, then selling 2 games would square it up easy. They cost a few cents to produce.
