Sony patents Emotion Engine emulator for Cell

Siliconera reports that Sony has filed a patent for an Emotion Engine emulation system to be used in conjunction with the PlayStation 3’s Cell processor.

For those unaware, the Emotion Engine was the name given to the chip designed to function as the PlayStation 2’s CPU, a feature that is notably missing from latter PS3 SKUs, hence why they aren’t backwards compatible.

However, utilizing this new technology, it would now be theoretically possible for PS3’s lacking the Emotion Engine to emulate the last-gen chip and play PS2 games without any additional hardware modifications. We'll have more on this story as it becomes available.

They still need to sort out the GPU problem. Thats what holds back the process.

HAHAHA! The PSU staff need lessons in English. Anyone else notice the wandering apostrophe in the third paragraph - PS3's!

Mike, apostrophes are a form of punctuation used to denote possession or acknowledge the absence of missing letters. This situation fits neither of the criteria. Seriously, you should make some edits before you make a fool of yourself for incorrect spelling. This isn't the first time it's happened, either!

@Stark101: Good job for trying to post "1st" and failing.

But so yea, does this mean all PS3's can play PS2 games?

I hope they will improve the visual quality as well. Unless it is just my LCD making things more blurry than they can be.

@5 Know how many I've played? A LOT - I've finished all the GTA's, DMC's, RE4, SH2 and 3 and loads more on my PS3. Honestly theres a lot of PS2 games that beat today's PS3 games. Oh and add God of War 1 and 2 to that list too

GREAT NEWS ... if they can get this to work ... it will turn alot of frowns upside down

    • 2:58pm BST - June 30th, 2009

But.. The EE is already gone in the Euro PS3's with backward compatibility.

Great they found the patent, but this has already been working for 2 years now in Euro 60 GB models. If it would have mentioned GS emulation it would have been newsworthy..

    • 3:05pm BST - June 30th, 2009

@5 Same here. Tomb Raider, God of War 2 and Transformers (the good one not the movie game)

Plus I even played a PSone game once, sheep dog and wolf. Anyone remeber that.

    • 4:16pm BST - June 30th, 2009

This would definitely be the ideal feature update that would help sell more units...I bought the 40gb model due to the price at the time and I love it...I still have a ps2 that works but I have to admit I really would like to be able to play my ps2 games on my ps3 also. We'll see how this one turns out...

The only other thing that I'm begging for is a rerelease of Suikoden II on PSN...come on Sony and Konami don't let me down!

@ 11 - It is quite common for many writers to use an apostrophe to denote plurality with an acronym.  I hope the Grand Poobah is satisfied.

    • 4:50pm BST - June 30th, 2009

@ 20, thank you for finally pointing this out.  The EE has already been emulated in all SW backwards compatable PS3s, so this is not really new.  If it is the EE and GS that are both emulated, then we can talk.

I have BC PS3 but this is a great news for all of us. One because a lot people don't have BC in their PS3. Two because sounds a lot better emulation than we have now, remember that actual emulation it's not perfect and some games got some glitches like MGS3 (frame rate) and FF12 frame rate drop in certain occasion (when PS2 not) and other games are apinful to play.

    I use to play often FF10, FF12, MGS2, MGS3, GoD, GoD2, RE4, Okami,CvsS2, Street Anniversary, DMC, DMC3 and many other more.

If this improve in some ways like resolution would be great :D

maybe then this'll fix the problems that plague us so. I'll be able to play some more Guilty Gear Accent Core plus, hit up megaman legends,  and have myself a good time.

I really hope they work on this. My first-run 80GB plays a lot of PS2 games, but struggles with a few.

The lack of PS2 support in the newer systems is what's keeping many of my friends and my girlfriend from getting one.

I've played dozens of PS2 games on my 60GB PS3, and one of my biggest fears is that someday my 60GB will crash and I'll be unable to get a backwards-compatable replacement.

This news is great if it fleshes out!
