Sony "pleased" with July NPD sales

Sony Computer Entertainment America has expressed that the company is “very pleased” with the recent NPD July hardware figures, despite sales of it’s PlayStation 3 console falling below expectations of industry analysts.
The PS3 sold 159,000 units of hardware for the month of July compared to Xbox 360’s 170,000, barely missing out on analyst predictions who forecast the console would outsell Microsoft’s competing machine for the first time since its launch in November 2006.
Mariam Sughayer, analyst relations manager for SCEA commented, "From a PlayStation perspective, coming out of E3 we were really anticipating a good reaction to our new hardware pricing announced on July 9, and we were obviously very pleased to see that PS3 sales increased with 159,000 units sold at retail, which puts us up 61 per cent over June numbers.”
Sughayer attributed the boost in sales to the application of the July price cut, in addition to growing anticipation for a number of exclusive software releases: "While I think a lot of that had to do with the new price, I also think there is a great deal of anticipation for the line up of games just around the corner”, she said.
"In fact, September should be definitely be a big month for us when you add in the launch of the new slimmer, lighter PSP.”

Whats funny to me, is the fact that The PS2 is still outselling the 360, and in reality for market shares sake, we should be looking at PS2 and PS3 numbers. The PS2 is more in line with the 360/ Wiis price, and the sales show. Sony is making plenty of money off of the PS2, so they can offset some of the loss on the PS3. That said, the PS3 is selling very well considering its price point.

PS3 should be swamping XBox 360 as its the latest machine to be launched. I would expect PS3 to now start selling more units than Xbox360 and if not - then Sony should just cut the price, and update the controller. I dont care if someone pays half the cost I did. If they can get more people interested, then more studio's will start to support PS3 again - which means we get more games and less ports.

I now think the PS3 will really shine and regain 1st place only in 2008, midle or even 3q 2008. Most people doesn't understant value for money.. until the ps3's price isn't really cut, I don't think it will change. so, 2008 = great games for the most incredible machine, home, etc... add to this Nintendo leaving off core gamers (only aiming casual), and new gamers wanting a true HD console with hardcore games.. the combat will be between the "old" Xbox360 and the new TrueHD PS3.. interesting time in any way ! (and don't forget, competition is good)

I can believe in Sony taking the lead next year, but right now I'm embarassed every time I walk in to a games store to see the extremely limited number of PS3 games... month after month. Guess that's to be understood considering they're a new platform, but I'm still definitely not buying my ps3 for at least a few more months.

PS3 is dead on arrival. The console was obsolete before it even launched. The price-point!. The consumer sweet spot is 250 bucks. It is going to be 3 years before PS3 can hit that sweet spot and in 3 years the 360 wil be 120 bucks. In 3 years nobody is going to give a rat turd's thought about the PS3.
