With tonight’s September sales figures, Sony is feeling poised to make the upcoming holiday seasons one of its best. In a statement on the PlayStation Blog Jack Tretton, Sony Computer Entertainment of America president and CEO, outlined the company’s success in September, explaining that “we are in the midst of one the most exciting times for PlayStation.”
Tretton called the release of the PS3 Slim, along with its $299 USD price tag, a “game changer.” He went on to recognize the company’s commitment to digital and mobile content through the new PSPgo and the success of the critically acclaimed Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
What is inspiring, for PlayStation fans, is the big-name games Sony has planned in the coming months, including Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, God of War III, MAG, and ModNation Racers. Other big titles coming out around the holidays include God of War Collection, LittleBigPlanet – Game of the Year Edition, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Assassin’s Creed 2.
In regards to the PS3, Tretton said Sony has seen a tremendous response to the new Slim’s value. As you may recall, Sony pushed more than one million units worldwide after its first three weeks.
“In NPD Group’s September 2009 video game sales data, released today, the PS3 ranked as the top console sold for the month, beating out all our competitors. It was also the only hardware platform to realize an increase of 112% when compared to the same period last year,” Tretton said.
As for the PSPgo, Tretton says the mobile device is “driving additional momentum for the entire PSP platform.” One interesting note is that in its first three days, top retail partners experienced a 300% lift in overall PSP hardware sales compared to the previous week. In the same timeframe, the PlayStation Network saw the biggest number of downloads ever for a single week.
Speaking about Uncharted 2, Tretton says the game was an enormous success. “The Naughty Dog team has delivered a truly visually stunning and immersive game that is clearly only possible on the PS3. It has garnered an average review score of 96 with more than 64 perfect scores. This game promises to be a system seller for PlayStation and we couldn’t be more pleased.
“There simply has never been a better time to be part of the PlayStation family and we look forward to providing you with the best entertainment content and experience for many, many years to come.”

"Tretton called the release of the PS3 Slim, along with its $299 USD price tag, as a “game changer.”
He recognizes the effect of a lower price, yet they introduce a more expensive 250gig console with no added features or incentive other than extra storage?
I hope for SONY's sake that they have more 120gig in production than the 250gig or those NPD figures could see a dip if the 349$ SKU becomes the more widely avaible one.

Eh, queue the obligatory mention of the 250GB SKU..
My guess is that Sony will do the same thing they did with the previous SKUs. They make a work order for certain HDDs and burn through it. The 250GB isn't anything short of an insurance policy for the Holiday Season to stay in stock. That's it. No conspiracy theory or evil hand wringing. It's just business.

This is awesome...I just bought Uncharted 2 last night. It was so cool how there were 11K people online playing! That is way better then the measly 250K Halo 3 has playing at anytime for the past 3.5 yrs. Eat it Microsoft!

Wow, the IQ of some people. @17, so it is encouraging that 250K mostly teenagers play a 2+ year old game? I love the variety that the PS3 gives me, something that the 360 just can't touch. Oh, sorry this is the US, the country of sheep.

I'm happy about this. I knew that the PS3 was the best system, but it was too darned expensive in the beginning. That said, the new PS3 is fuglier than my old Odyssey 2 system. Good f#@k I'm old. Glossy old PS3 ftw!

"Eh, queue the obligatory mention of the 250GB SKU. <snip> No conspiracy theory or evil hand wringing.."
did I say it was? Nope, I merely alluded to the fact that it may be a bad business decision if they decided to roll out more 250gig units than 120gig untis during the holiday season... I am talking entry level price point here, not evil conspiracy as you suggest. Tretton HIMSELF the 299$ price point a game changer. I am agreeing with that!
And if we are putting a thought on what the business plan might be for the holiday season, than IMO it's a bad one to use the 250gig SKU as an "insurance poilicy to remain in stock" because the "regular" folks will see if a price tag of 349$ if the 120gig SKU runs out, which will most likely happen.
the 250gig SHOULD come bundled with either extra controller or game OR BOTH! Then it would make more sense.
What I think the future plan is with the 250gig is it will become the 299$ SKU next March and the 120gig will roll out at 249$ or less just in time for GT5 and FFXIII....
If you thought I am forecasting doom, you couldn't be more wrong, I foresee great success for the PS3 at a entry level price of 299$ OR LESS.

I agree with you 23. If I wanted to play a game with 250K *insert word of choice here* then I would go and buy Halo 3 and that POS box. Yeah, 11K people may not be that high of a number but you have to remember that Uncharted isnt MADE for multiplayer. It's more like a bonus. And a very good bonus at that. I'm glad I don't have to listen to a bunch of whiney brats when I play UC2 online. sheep indeed

Now as I know and expect to be called a troll or a hater or whatever these people with there heads up there own rears want to call me I am not expecting much agreement with me
Firstly, the breakbox or crapbox or whatever people are calling it this week led the way, its online gaming and chat is still superior to the ps3, it was always going to be difficult when the console was brought out early to try and compete with the xbox, as an owner of both consoles I can see that the ps3 is miles ahead in terms of blu ray and internet access, but when the xbox releases all of its originals( majority on time) the ps3 has failed time and time again to the point that when the games are finally released they are a massive disappointment, these are not bad games, its just the anticipation and hype never lives up to reality , eg - killzone, motorstorm2, gt prologue.
I am assuming that the majority of haters are people who can only afford 1 console, so refuse to open there eyes to any alternatives out there, I have owned a ps1, 2, 3 ,psp and a sony tv so any anti sony comments are laughable, the ps3 is improving by the week and if sony can just sort out the accessibility of certain menus, improve online chat quality and pull their finger out with the release of the triple a titles then I have no doubt that it will be a quality console, unfortunately my fear is that the new xbox will be released by then!
And ghostbusters really doesnt impress me as an exclusive!
