Sony talks screen capturing with PS3

Posted on October 15th, 2008 at 11:42 EDT

Following the release of Firmware 2.50 today, PSU.com contacted Sony for more details on the screen capture feature and how this function will be supported by present and future PlayStation 3 titles.

"There aren't any games that support the screenshot capability just yet, but we know there's a lot of excitement among PS3 owners for this feature and would expect developers to begin offering it moving forward," a company representative said.

"Supporting titles will be announced in the future."

Despite this, we’d be willing to bet that titles such as LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, and Resistance 2 will support this feature either at launch or via a post release patch.

Stay tuned for more details as they break.

I'm bitterly disapointed with this because I was expecting the PS3 to take the screen shots not the games.

The update DID have flash 9, it did for me anyway. This is good for people like me who use their PS3 as their main web browser and so they don't have to rush to a computer to watch a new trailer of LBP. The screen-shots aren't THAT exciting but it would of been a GREAT feature if the patches weren't needed, but I understand.

Well, judging by in-game music, game devs are not very good at patching their games. There's still a lot of games lacking trophies.

If a feature requires games to be patched I consider it a broken feature.

It would be nice if all games supported this. Don’t expect Call of Duty 4 to have this function, though. They wouldn’t even bring us In-Game music or trophies. Those bastards! I bet only a handful of games will use this function. What a shame.

It was a mistake to announce this as an upcoming feature and NOT to announce the Flash 9 up front... "in games that support it" isn't a system feature... Well, it can be (trophies) but screenshots that are game specific aren't a system feature, they're obviously a GAME feature... Lame.

I strongly believe that the hardware should be the one to handle the screenshot feature. Everyone sees that 3rd party support is severely lacking. What gets me is that Sony knows this, but gives them yet another option to just disregard. Shame too, because I was looking forward to taking some screens of the Bioshock demo. I'm really starting to question their actions here lately. Think about it for a moment: they can implement a feature to play a 15 second preview loop for any video you have stored, but can't let you take a simple snapshot of what's currently on screen? No pun intended, but what's wrong with this picture?

LOL @18, went straight for the porn.   Anyway, I'd imagine the system update allows the screen capture to take place, but if the game doesn't support taking that image and sending it to the hard drive, then nothing would happen. As things are, when you are playing a game it is only able to save things to the harddrive with it's game-saving feature, so the system and the game must agree on what to do with screen shots before they can be taken.

.......I dunno why Sony cant just have these things as active addons that run from the system. Cause really no body is ever going to write the code into games no matter how easy it is developers just aint gon do it.

What about the custome soundtracks? Can't use it cause aint no body usin the fricken code in the games.

Just make them background protocols DAMMIT Sony, DAMMIT!

the problem with the PS3 system taking the shots is you would have to somehow designate a key on your controller to make the capture, other than that the PS3 would be more than capable of doing it, the problem is the lack of dedicated (print screen style) key. even incorporating it into a game will be interesting to see what sort of button config or combo they will use to make the capture, or maybe they will implement something within the pause menu.
