Sony to continue to add PSN services for free

Posted on August 28th, 2008 at 05:39 EDT

Sony's policy of providing free network services for PlayStation 3 owners looks to have a bright future, with Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida confirming the company is looking to bring further diversified functionality to the console.

"We're more open about approaching and bringing services in to PS3 and PSP," he stated. "We can't support all the needs of the consumer and there are great companies providing services on the PC already - so we're very open to provide the opportunity to those companies to reach our user base as well."

No mention of any specific examples was stated, but with free Internet play and music video streaming in place it seems Sony will be looking to branch out to more outlandish content.

"There are things we're looking at, and learning how we can provide a service without people having to pay," he continued. "But we still get our operation running with funding from somewhere so that we can maintain the level of quality we want." Advertising looks set to play a big part here.

"We like to provide as many services as possible for free - we already provide our network access for gameplay for free - and the interesting thing about the network side and the Internet business is that there's a variety of revenue sources."

If they keep this up, we'll have no reason to own a PC in a couple of years time.

good mediaplayer like vlc (i hope they will introduce the DivX 7.0 features when it comes out), foto editor, chat like msn and all you need for surfing the net (updated flash player and such). If they could manage this the next couple of years, i think it would be enough for most people on the multimedia side...

We already pay for internet service as is, to pay to play games as another online service fee is just plan wrong. Xbox don't care, its like paying for online service two times.

the next big thing to bring to the PS3 would be a music store since in game music will be added to games. let us download music to our xmb then let us download music to our mp3 and mp4. then get APPLE for ITUNES that would let us download music and movies to our IPODS and CONSOLES.

that will pull 85% of teens and ppl in there 20's like me from the PC to PS3.  then SONY will need to give the web browser an upgrade

"If they keep this up, we'll have no reason to own a PC in a couple of years time."  And this is exactly why Microsoft got involved in the console business, to eliminate all threats to their monopoly and almost succeeded with the Xbox 360.  Though all these new features are great I think Sony needs to be more focussed on the beating the competion or else they might just go the way of the Dreamcast and Dodo bird.
