We know most of you don't play MMOs, but we also know most of you like a little Final Fantasy. Square Enix wants to give you more than a little, having unveiled three new expansion packs for its PlayStation 2, PC and Xbox 360 MMO Final Fantasy XI. The first of these will be available to purchase worldwide in spring 2009, with its brethren following "every few months thereafter."
Here's the blurb:
A Crystalline Prophecy – Ode of Life Bestowing™
One day, a giant crystal appeared in the skies above Jeuno, triggering a series of unexplained happenings across the land. Now, adventurers will set forth to unravel the mysteries of this primordial crystal that holds the secret of Vana’diel®’s past.
A Moogle Kupo d’Etat – Evil in Small Doses™
It all started with an innocent drop of rainwater and a rickety, ramshackle Mog House desperately in need of repairs. Little did anyone suspect that this was only the beginning of a harrowing nightmare unheard of in the annals of moogle-kind.
A Shantotto Ascension – The Legend Torn, Her Empire Born™
The eccentric Professor Shantotto returned to Windurst one day after a mysterious, unexplained absence, shocking her colleagues with behavior so outrageous it put her old self to shame! When she goes so far as to proclaim herself ruler of her own empire, adventurers set out to discover the truth behind her alarming shift in personality.
Final Fantasy XI has seen four expansion packs since its Japanese release in 2002, and is currently going steady with an alleged 500,000 active users across the globe. The new packs will be digitally distributed simultaneously on all three platforms.

@Rauland, The PS2 version of FFXI is only available on HDD. Don't see a problem with adding expansions to that. FFXI never got released for EU PS2.
They should start porting it to PS3 if they want to enlarge their user base.

I played FFXI for over 3 years and I quit earlier this year. Instead of bringing out more expansions I would like to see SE make a new FF MMO. One built around being able to solo and not depend on other people. A fresh new story and overhualed graphics. I know they have add alot to where soloing is now possible but I have moved on.

Yes the game work on BC with PS2 PS3 systems. Just go to the PS store and download/install the PS2 HDD partition patch and install FFXI like normal. http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ffxi&thread.id=239280 You will need to find the PS2 FFXI game plus the current 3 expansion promethia, Urgan and Wings of the Goddess. Dont even bother playing ffxi without the expansions. BTW i love the campaign battles.
