There’s just something about the New Year that brings fresh success to the Sony PlayStation brand. First and foremost, the PlayStation 3’s continued success is already hinting towards takeover this year, with Blu-ray having all but cemented itself as the lead high definition platform. Then there is the PSP, which is enjoying equal exposure as CES brought new light to the handheld such as Skype and GPS technology.
In terms of sales, things certainly seem to be on the up. For the week ending January 13, the PSP was a mere 1,210 units behind the Nintendo DS Lite, which known as the handheld of choice among the Japanese.
DS Lite - 97,369
PSP - 96,159
Wii - 84,530
PlayStation 3 - 38,907
PlayStation 2 - 14,499
Xbox 360 - 4,690
If the PSP can steadily improve and stay on point with quality, then perhaps we might see a PSP take over in Japan. This will no doubt bold well for the folks over at Sony, and should silence those who previously expressed concerns that the company has no clear goals for the handheld system.

Well the DS had to eventually run out of steam, just like the Wii will. It can't sell that good forever. With better PSP games coming out, we might finally see an upset.
