Final Fantasy IX Remake Has Now Reportedly Stalled Despite Being ‘Very Far Along’

The long-rumoured Final Fantasy IX Remake is currently stalled despite getting quite far along in development, according to RPGSite’s Alex Donaldson.

Speaking in a thread on ResetEra, Donaldson stated that the Final Fantasy IX remake was a single project and therefore wouldn’t be released across multiple titles like the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. Here’s what Donaldson had to say regarding the FFIX remake:

IE, there was an FF9 remake, and it was a single game, and it was very far along. Yoshida even made some vague comments like these hinting at the fact around the last expansion’s FF9 tribute content. So, it is possible, with the right scope, which to be clear is obviously a smaller scope than FF7R. However for various reasons – surely a story for another day – that project stalled out, and it’s no longer moving forward. And Yoshida makes comments like this to manage fan expectations.

So, is there any hope for the FFIX remake to see the light of day? Well, Donaldson did say that the new Dissidia game was essentially scrapped for more than a year, and was later resurrected. As such, FFIX remake could be picked up again at some point, as it would be a shame for al that work to go to waste — we’ll just have to wait and see.

Having said that, Donaldson also noted that “illustrations created as potential box art and as key art were just tweeted out for the anniversary,” so it’s probably best to keep your expectations in check.

This is far from the first time we’ve heard about a Final Fantasy IX remake. Back in June 2023, Jeff Grubb stated that the project was in the pipeline and Gematsu also independently verified reports that Square Enix was looking to revamp the classic PSOne title. However, in October 2025 leaker NateTheHate said FFIX remake was on ice and was unsure if it would be revisited, something which he reiterated was still the case in March this year.
