Insomniac Games looks to stay independent

In today’s current state of industry deals, it is not uncommon to see a larger company buy out a smaller one. This has happened all across the board in the past few years with one of the more recent ones being Electronic Arts purchasing Bioware/Pandemic, the creators behind Mass Effect and Mercenaries 2.

Insomniac Games, the creative minds behind Resistance: Fall of Man and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, is a small studio with a lot of punch in this industry - and from what CEO Ted Price has said, it aims to stay that way.

In an interview during the D.I.C.E. event held last week, Price admitted that he is constantly approached and asked about selling, private equity money to which he has always declined.

While the company currently does not have the bandwidth to develop cross-platform he insisted that it is impressive to look at the great success and sales figures of those companies who do develop cross-platform, as if there is a slight hint that Insomniac may go multiplatform in the future given the opportunity.

However keeping things PlayStation 3 specific, Price said in the interview that in the future, the PS3 will move beyond the typical gaming machine mold and into a more multimedia scheme to garner a much larger audience. This will come, as more users will learn the full capabilities of the machine. Furthermore, Price mentioned that developing games specifically for PSN is something they are currently looking into.

"I think that we are optimistic that PlayStation 3 will continue to expand its base beyond the hardcore gamer as more and more games come out for it - especially as PSN continues to offer more free demos and more content that can be accessed by anybody very easily," said Price.

"We've actually thought seriously about doing a PSN title. It just hasn't made its way into our current production cycle yet."

Currently the team is hard at work on Resistance 2, of which Price discusses about in our recent news story here.

This is great news, rather than companies thinking of there wallets getting bigger from buyouts, its good to see a company dedicated and to have all there concentration focused onto the ps3! The future with Insomniacs is going to be very bright!

i don't care if they stay alone as long as they keep the love on ps3 in my opinion insomniac is one of the best developers out there and a lot of people should learn off of them cough*EA*cough and instead of whining about the ps3 just learn it and move on cause it's here to stay. (cause knowledge is power) lol thats hilarious....

Why is this news? I didnt for one minute think Insomniac would want to be bought up

Hope they dont decide to go multiplaty though. That would suck.

Why shouldn't they go multiplatform? I would.

@Limanima if they go multiplatform the games would preform vary week and not use the consoles potential power so they would have to down grade the specs just to make it work on the 360 or even the wii exclusive games will run at top noch and show off the console's power and also push other developers to do the same.

It's really weird, big companies like Activision blizzard,Ubisoft and the like take so long to make one single sub-par title, and a small company like Insomniac keeps pumping out AAA titles all across the board,in a fraction of the time.

I would really like to see a credible game developer like Insomniac make a few 'old-school' games for the PSN. The 'twists' they put on genres would make it an interesting project.

Tis kewl that they want to stay independant and they do a very good job as an independant company! They make great games and don't take forever to do so.

I honestly couldn't imagine Insomniac creating like wii and 360 games if like Ubisoft or EA or some other company bought em' The quality just wouldnt fit right unless the titles would be for a certain broadened audience.

I like Insomniac for these reasons, they think more about the games and if anybody else has notice stayed exclusive with the company that helped them become greatly known. Anyway keep up the great games and waiting for Resistance 2.
