Microsoft hasn't reached beyond FPS fans, says Sony

Sony’s Scott Steinberg has said that Microsoft has failed to capitalize on its one-year lead over the PlayStation 3, stating that the Xbox 360 has been unsuccessful in its attempts to “reach beyond the core first person shooter player.”
"The time that they had to create huge distance and build a massive install base before the PS3 could really take root; that opportunity is over and there's no real capitalization of it," said Steinberg, Vice President of Product Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA)
"They had a great crescendo moment with Halo and it helped catapult them into a pretty strong position towards the back end of last year, but they were still within a stone's throw of where they were with the original Xbox”, he continued.
"To me that speaks of a failure to broaden their reach beyond the core first person shooter player who was in their back pocket for Xbox.”
As such, Steinberg feels that Sony is in no danger of having shares swept from under its feet, adding, "The question for us is 'are they really going after the PS2 demographic? Are they stealing share from us?' And the answer is no."
Finally, he then pointed to the PlayStation 2’s worldwide installed base, referring to it as the company’s “secret weapon” in terms of users making the transition to the next-generation with the PlayStation 3.
"That's the secret weapon, that's what goes unreported. It's this 41 million universe of PS2 owners that will be targeted very, very soon to upgrade to a PS3 Blu-ray machine," he concluded.

Actually I think Sony is right in this one. Microsoft really only excels at first person shooters, where Sony has all kinds of game genres. And now when PS3 has surpassed Xbox 360 in worldwide sales, their statement of Xbox 360 only having 1 year of lead is indeed true.
And it's nice to see Sony attack Microsoft. Microsoft has been the agressor all the time, so it's nice to see Sony bites back.

PS3s best genre's are third person games. Whether its shooting, action, adventure or RPG. I feel at home when I play a 3rd person game on a playstation controller..... and also any 2D fighters.

@NeutralMilkAjC The only good games are FPS's, huh? You play Eye of Judgement or Uncharted or the #1 baseball game three years running, MLB the show? It sounds like you are the demographic he was talking about. I've been saying this for EVER. NA gamers have shifted back to western gamer tastes. Remember this, when people say "PS3 has no games", what they're really saying is "PS3 doesn't release a FPS game a month like the X360 does". Thisis why I got rid of my 360...they had the PERFECT opportunity to be the "everything box" but stuck to being "the back up console for primary PC players". Yeah, there are a lot of people like that, but I'm not one of them.

What the heck is a "sci-fi simulator"? Anyway, I've always felt that the PS brand represented gamers with broader tastes. I play everything. The BEST of everything. Yeah, I play COD4, but you wouldn't catch me dead on Resistance or Unreal. I've always gave people the advice of if you want mindless bullets, by all means, go green and get an Xbox. No fanboy junk...I just know those types will be happier there.

Its true, they have failed to reach beyond the first person shooter player. I think this will come back to haunt Mr. Scott Steinberg. And I agree with 'killercop', Sony does have a lot of genres were Microsoft only really speicialize in FPS henre.

lol i love when Sony fight back... for too long has Microsoft criticised other companies. Im not gonna lie; i own a 360. I only own it cause there are some cool exclusives on it, but when it comes to whos the better of the two - and who actually knows what they're talking about - Sony with the PS3 have the upper hand. Blu-ray is gonna skyrocket within the next couple of years (2008-2009) and things are gonna be a looooot different. 10.5+ million already.. the PS3 is catching up RADILY.
