Sony not competing with Microsoft or Nintendo, says Hirai

Sony Computer Entertainment President Kazuo Hirai has stated he feels the company is not competing directly against Microsoft and Nintendo in the current hardware cycle, and is instead focusing on the entertainment industry as a whole.
Speaking to MCV this week, Hirai commented, “I think that PS3, PS2 and PSP are all entertainment platforms so I feel that our competition is not Microsoft or Nintendo, but basically any form of entertainment that is competing for the consumers’ attention.”
“So we need to make sure we offer the most compelling entertainment – not videogame entertainment but in entertainment in general. I can’t speak for their strategy but I like to think that we’ve got a very well balanced portfolio with PS3, PSP and you can’t discount the PS2.”
Hirai also recently expressed his confidence that the PlayStation 3 would emerge as the victory in the current hardware battle during its expected 10-year life cycle.
Stay tuned.

Sony have the most and best quality exclusives this year and next at the very least. On the gaming side, that's what's most important to me.

Righteous is right. Sony is in third place with pi$$ed off gamers because the lack of focus on the PS3 being a game console. Sony needs to stop with the empty promises and get back to gaming. They have other toys like tvs, mp3 players, and such to use as multimedia devices. I bought a PS3 for a game console because Sony tacked a 3 on the end and called it a game console when their focus was not on games. They delay everything under the sun that has to do with gaming while focusing on updates to play seasons of buffy on my game console. They also just said that they could have released Killzone 2 this year but wanted to hold out due to stiff competition from games like Gears of War 2. Maybe its just me but I thought that Gears 2 was an Xbox 360 exclusive and Killzone 2 was a PS3 exclusive? Just what seems to be the competition there? Its just excuse after excuse with them and their dev teams. This statement has made up my mind on which console to buy next time around.

Lukky1:
Well if your done with your anger spell, ud know that sony has focused much on gaming, 1st most of the delays are not sonys fault but the devs that are working on them. 2nd Sony is focusing on entertainment because thats what the future is, I dunno about you but I DIDN'T pay 600$ just for games, I mean I have always been a huge Sony fan, but they have to compete with the XBox who is giving entertainment other then just games. but if you want to go xbox720 or whatever in like 2 years go for it, and we will all laugh at you while we play kill zone, MGS4, and all the other great exclusives we got.

I'm more than happy with my PS3 and I think they've made the right choices.... just look at the Blu-ray choice, now they are on top and HD-DVD is where? oh yeah, they are gone.
I think it's good to have ambition, and how can you claim they don't take care of us gamers with so many good games out and coming soon. I honestly don't envy any of the 360 or nintendo games (maybe zelda and mario). -

I very much prefer my PS3 as an Entertainment Device. Yes, some delay's have occured, but the games that come out exclusivly have all been good, and in my opinion worth the wait. As for the Crapbox, have fun with the ring of death machine, oh and the fact you have to pay to play online. Don't worry though, I'm sure by the time the x720 comes out M$ will have licensed Blu-Ray from sony, and they will finally be able to develope games that are big enough to compete with the PS3.

I like the fact that Sony built the PS3 as a Multimedia Console and Gaming Console. Whenever I buy something, I like to get as many uses out of it as possible and the PS3 offers so much more than gaming.
At least us PS3 owners can watch Blu-Ray and game on our systems as long as we want without having to worry about our systems crashing like so many 360's with the RROD. Microsoft has to keep coming out with these new stupid chips just to reduce the hardware failure rate.
While Microsoft is still trying to figure out how the heck can they eliminate the RROD (possibly with the Jasper chip), Sony is focused on game development, and when you look at the upcoming PS3 exclusives for this year and next year, you can see that Sony has not forgotten about the PS3 being a gaming console and Sony is just getting started because Sony's big games haven't even come out yet.
After Microsoft releases Gears 2, I wonder what the heck they are going to do next because the only big game for Microsoft in 2009 that I know of is Bioshock 2 and it's not coming out until Q3-Q4 2009. There's also Alan Wake for the 360 as well, but almost nothing is known about the game, and it was supposed to be a 360 launch title and there isn't even a time table for the game's release.
All I've got to say is that Sony will be dominating again with the PS3. With God of War 3, Twisted Metal, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2, Wardevil, L.A. Noire, and other un-announced PS3 exclusives for 2009, the PS3's future just looks brighter and brighter.

This is either bad spin or someone hasn't mastered the English language yet. The title should read, "Sony not JUST competing with Microsoft or Nintendo, says Hirai"
Anyone at Sony who doesn't think they are competing against Microsoft probably shouldn't be working there in the first place.

I have only ever heard Sony talk about the entertainment industry in a whole, never about certain companies thinking about it. I've only heard M$ and G4 talk about them and the war to such a high point.
