Hirai: X360 "lacks longevity," Sony not competing w/ Nintendo

President of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Kazuo Hirai has said that he believes the company is not in competition with Nintendo, further adding that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 “lacks longevity.”

“I’d like to think that we continue official leadership in this industry,” Hirai told the Official PlayStation Magazine.

“It’s difficult to talk about Nintendo because we don’t look at their console as being competitors. They’re a different world and we operate in our world - that’s kind of the way I look at things.

“And with the Xbox - again, I can’t come up with one word to fit. You need a word that describes something that lacks longevity,” he said.

Hirai noted that Microsoft has yet to have a console on the market beyond the four-five year mark, as opposed to previous iterations in the PlayStation brand, with Sony committing to a ten-year life cycle for its latest home console, PS3.

Furthermore, the Sony boss is adamant that its competitors are unlikely to have a higher install base than PS3 at the end of a console life cycle – that is, unless things “go really bad.”

“Last time I checked, they’ve never had a console that’s been on the market for more than four or five years and we’ve committed to a ten year life cycle, so you do the math.

“And unless things go really bad there’s no way that at the end of a life cycle our competition is going to have a higher install base,” he observed.

Granted.... this is only Microsoft's second console.  So, to say they have "never" had one go past the 4 or 5 year mark is a bit disingenuous.

of course the 360's lack longevity the damn thing only lasts 6 months to a year and then you start a constant cycle of gaming and repairs that becomes frustrating i dont know how people can say that they've sent the system in 12 times or im on my 3rd 360 thats just retarded im glad i sold my 360 i dont need the headache all i need is my ps3 and my wii. plus the 360's 09 line-up looks pretty boring

Sony will definitely out live the 360, no doubt about it. Sony = Quality, Microsoft = crappy.  Same goes for Microsoft software, its always full of problems and glitches and not made very well.

Maybe MS should have the meaning of 3 years officially be recognised as 5? Stupid comment Hirai. Stupid. You could say that you doubt the consoles ability to keep up with the hardware market compared to it's main competitor. Also, what one word have you come up with for Nintendo or indeed Sony itself? Or are we talking poop for the sake of it.

@1 and 2 , you guys are right, i was thinking this Hirai guy hit the nail on the head, granted Microsoft have had 2 consoles, but if you look at their history they have release the consoles over a five year period, and dont usually last 6 months before breaking, I still have my Playstation, and its lasted longer than however many years Sony predicted it would last, so i put my trust and faith into Sony when they say PS3 will last 10 years and maybe more

"I'd like to think that we continue official leadership in this industry"

Get a grip Sony, you're console sales are way behind the 360, and yet, you don't do anything about it and assume people will buy more even though we are going through a recession.

Hirai just stating the obvious in my opinion. Microsoft is the cancer of the gaming industry, and is bringing nothing new to the table, only stolen ideas and games that appeal to the americanized market, which I am glad not to be a part of.. I will never spend my money on a piece of hardware that breaks every 6 months, is already outdated and incredible expensive if you want full functionality out of it.

    @6

Yeah you can say that Sony is behind in console sales. But taken into account how many years the PS3 has been on the market,it has actually sold better than the 360. Only reason the 360 is so "successful" is that sneaky move Microsoft made when they just shut down support for the original Xbox and rushed a 360 launch, which later proves was a disaster. They don't care about the customer AT ALL! Knowing the 360 had multiple malfunctions and still the release it just so they can rob customers of money and "rob" Sony's installbase. They knew the disc drive could scratch games, but left it that way. One option to fix this problem was longer loading times. Well I say, FACE the consequences. This (longer load times) should've been the solution, NOT disc scratching and ruined games for the consumers, which will not be replaced unless it's a Microsoft published game! That is bullcrap!!!

I'm not saying I really care about Sony's business and all that stuff, because Sony has probably done their share of bad things in the past. But it's first now that I am somewhat grown up and really care about this stuff and I see how Microsoft are taking advantage of consumers (like they always have). This is not the first time Microsoft has made something faulty, as my brand new computer got the bluescreen after 1 hour of use back in the days.. I just can't stand companies that tries to fool the consumers (not like us here on the net, because we are informed). Like lots of people on forums say they don't need Wi-Fi and they are fully aware that the 360 doesn't offer Wi-Fi, but for instance my mom, if she were to buy a 360 Arcade for Christmas, she wouldn't know about that hidden cost of $100 for the adapter nor would she know about the $50 annual fee for LIVE nor the overpriced harddrive. So when she walks into the store thinking she saves money on the 360, she's actually getting "robbed" by Microsoft, TO THE FULLEST!

Damn, wall of text... Sorry guys, I was on a run.. LOL..

my ps2 has lasted longer than most 360's... ha ha. Infact it has never broke.

@ 10, I agree, Microsoft rip those who don't research the console market off, and thats mostly parents who buy for their kids. Which is why Sony need to advertise what they have compared to them

    ps3_axe..  u go dude ! lol

Ive got a PS3 & 360 and tbh ive played the 360 about a dozen times in the last year. I stopped my Live Gold  last July & now only play Geometry wars 2 till my eye`s start to bleed (40 mins per session). Other than that i dont touch it. Since i put it vertical the disc tray doesnt open either unless i jam a knife in to prise it open. My original xbox got a dodgy disc tray & eventually met its maker once i had enough & battered the living daylights outta it. (i pretended it was bill gates`s head) i`d recommend it as a stress releiver !!

PS3 is now getting into its stride in 09

funny thing you mention about your PS2 lasted longer than the 360. My NES, SNES, N64, GC, PS1 and PS2 have all lasted longer than the 360. and each one of them have had more playtime than ANY 360 out there EVER. It's disgusting..

All my friends that had an xbox360 already got the RROD. I got it to, I live in central america I end up spending more money sending it to US to get it repaired so I just burned the thing down. After that I bought a ps3 and been palying since. And well Wii is not in the next gen game competition it has ruined and given a bad image to the gaming industry bunch of sell outs.

You really must be confused with all the anti PS3 hype and storys. Take a look at the numbers. The PS3 DID sell more in 2008 everywhere. On NPD while the 360, after a dramatic price cut and amazing sales, only pulled +100k YoY while the PS3 gained around a million. If that Jump was thanks to MGS, can you imagine what KZ2, and God of war 3 might do?

MS didn't let the xbox die....... they killed it. So we cannot really tell if their systems had legs but I am willing to bet that the sales slowed down so much for the GC and the Xbox that killing them saved money for each respective company.

Pointing to state of affairs now is so laughable because the known titles for the 360 are all out, while the PS3 is just starting to Gear up. What has flown over peoples heads is the gradual growth thanks to titles. People may not flock to  "killer apps" like on the 360 but the niches will flock back when their favored titles hit the console.

Delightful little trolls we have here.

Of course the 360 lacks longevity and of course the Wii is in its own market. Thanks Hirai...
