Former Sony Chairman: Nintendo is getting it right

Nobuyuki Idei may only be a business and investment consultant nowadays, but he was Sony's Chairman from 1999 to 2005. That time period was a very prosperous gap for the electronics giant, so it's no surprise that so many come to him for consultation.
Idei recently spoke with The Financial Times in order to discuss Japan's struggling electronics industry, claiming that he was quite confident in a company like Nintendo and what they're achieving. Furthermore, Idei discussed how the Japanese electronics industry should consolidate and push forward.
"In the past, Japan was criticized for being an over-banked country; now it is over-electronics," Idei commented.
The Nintendo Wii was brought up when Idei discussed how electronic companies should consider going beyond processing information. He feels companies should "sense what it is happening in the world and then act on it." He then went on to cite how the Wii has done a great job doing just that, claiming that Nintendo is getting it right.

No, you're comparing apples to oranges here. Nintendo isn't trying to be a gaming company this gen, they moved on to....what would be the word to describe it? Casual tools? Either way, I got no gaming out of the Wii that I had except Twilight Princess and Resident Evil 4. This tard's just saying to do whatever you can to make the most money? Fail...Then we'd have three companies catering to the SAME audience, and the market would split.

Well, they are. The only problem if others (Sony and MS) follow is that us (the more hardcore gamers) would be left out; I don't think that would be good for the business either.

Obviously they're doing their own thing correctly, but you can't compare what they're doing to what Sony and Microsoft is doing. It's not only about the hardware, but the investments they make into the software, not to mention multimedia capabilities. The Wii has, quite literally, almost none.
Not everyone can just switch markets like Nintendo did, or you're going to have 140 million users + (PS2 user types) out in the cold, not having THEIR thing to enjoy.
No Sony, no Microsoft, neither of you can do what the Wii has done now. Nintendo's succesfully gotten into the minds of all the parents, grandparents, teachers, and every other person who normally condemns gamers to helI, and they've convinced them that the Wii is actually some way to get smarter or get thinner. It's the new hype train that a DIFFERENT kind of people are riding. Yea, it's spreading by word of mouth just like Halo. Halo is that game that travels by word of mouth, that game that EVERYONE hypes because other people are hyped.
The same situation is going on with Nintendo's products, it's just to a different market type.

Sony got it right with the PS3 + Blu-Ray and winning the HD format war. All the PS3 needs is a price drop....and we already know this!

nintendo aint getting s hit right. They are out of ideas. There done. they admited it themselves. What make the company so properous is that the, ignorant average joe. who Dosent know a da mn thing about video games. so they decide to buy the wii. since one its cheap and two its has that little g ay controller. Once the ps3 is around the two fifty or three hundred range all of those 127 million ps2 owners will buy the ps3 quick fast and in an hurry

I have a Nintendo Wii and from when I was 5 I have owned nothing but Nintendo products. Nintendo, Gamboy, Super Nintendo, Gameboy Color, Nintendo 64, Gameboy Advance and SD, and now the Wii. It wasnt til about a little after owning the 64 was when I got a Playstation. Now I own Playstation products. Playstation 1, 2 and now 3 along with the PSP. When I owned a Playstation I hardly rarely EVER play my Nintendo brand. Even my Wii now is just sitting on my shelf collecting dust. All I have to say is that the Wii is good but it lacks good software. I think Wii Sports is about one of the best games on the Wii. Theres those select few like Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Twilight Princess, and Wii Fit who are top sellers. Now 24 going on 25, I only liked Nintendo when I was a kid before intermediate and high school. If he says that Nintendo is going the right way, then hes saying in a way that kids are taking over the market from us hardcore gamers and their parents and grandparents are helping them. That will make lawmakers and people who don't like videogames real happy cause Nintendo has not one game that people complain about (GTA series and shooters). What is this world coming too? Lets go fellow hardcore gamers. We can let our freedom of doing the things we want in games go away cause of this like killing people or stealing cars. I would rather have anyone I know killing and steal in a game than in real life. Right?

Nintendo iare doing there own thing and its working. Now Sony got it right by installing a bluray player into the PS3 Thus winning the format war. 360 well lets just say their losin it, meaning their system has already been maxed out and they dont make HDDVD's anymore which makes their HDDVD DRIVE USELESS.

Honestly, I hope Nintendo will fall. If the Wii is the future of gaming then I'm not going to be a part of it. I had a Wii, it was fun for a few weeks and that's it. Nintendo may have gained parents and older people that weren't interesed in games before, but they are losing all of theyre fanbase and core gamers. The only real good games I saw on the Wii were mostly ports of the Gamecube and PS2, the only kind of good games were Mario Kart and Mario Galaxy, but both didn't live up to the hype in my opinion. I will stick with the PS and Xbox consoles, and I hope Sony won't make a PSwii as theyre next console.

The only reason why the Wii has sold so much is because it was the cheapest console at launch. And it has a controller that brain washes non hardcore gamers into thinking that its something revolutionary.

The only thing that Nintendo got right was making a popular console. However, they failed at making a quality console for gamers.I'm not mad at their success, because I don't have to play the Wii which I don't.It's just a shame that they sold out because they could not compete with Sony when it came to great hardware and software. We all just have to except that the Playing with power days are long gone and have been for over a decade now.Instead of us bashing the Wii,we should appreciate the PS3 for staying true to what Nintendo help build.

this wii thing is starting to make me nervous,i wonder what`s their secret.Nintendo simply released the wii, which is a very average console, and it`s actually competing with ps3,and the 360.........how strange,i wonder why people are buying such a thing like the wii, simple graphics, simple games.........how weird! imean it`s not even capable to compete with the ps2,perhaps it`s price is the reason behind it`s so called success.

@12 - The Wii is appealing to females (my mother and sister).Female gamers are still a minority, but the average female seems to like the Wii.My mother really thought that the Wii really played the way that they advertized it in the commercials and some people actually believe that it will help you get into shape.Basically, the Wii is the gaming equivalent of Tae-Bo tapes.

They are just continuing down the path they started. N54, the gamecube, the gameboy the DS and the wii, are all push towards casuals. Nintendo is the disney of the game world.
