Sony patents emotion recognition tech

GI.biz reports that Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has filed patents for software that has the capacity to recognise various human emotions such as laughter, sadness, joy, anger and boredom.

Apparently, the technology is not just limited to home consoles, though it’s worth pointing out that the artwork filed by Sony clearly depicts a PlayStation 3 as well as a Bravia TV. It is believed the patents are most likely related to the platform holder's ‘wand’ peripheral unveiled back at E3 in June.

Interestingly, the tech bares a striking resemblance to Microsoft’s Project Natal, specifically developer Lionhead’s demo of Milo and Kate, which demonstrates the ability to detect not only movement, but also various emotional response based on both facial and voice recognition.

Stay tuned to PSU for more details as they become available to us.

Sony will always win. Its like Jesus. Everyone bagged him and disbelieved him but then BAM he showed everyone who he really was. Well everyone hates Sony and doesnt believe in it. But us Sony companions know better, and anythiing xbox does is pfff who cares but when sony does stuff, its woah sweet as.

I think some of you are confusing 'motion' with 'Emotion'.

I honestly don't see what all the hoopla is over this. It seems pretty worthless to me.

Just because you don't see the point, doesn't mean there is not a point.

When ICO came out, many people did not get it and just proclaimed that it sucked.  Shadow of Colossus got the same reception.  What is weird is that many people are reacting exactly the same with Last Guardian.  Just because you don't understand something does not mean it sucks.

People with vision know that Sony motion control is very advanced stuff.  It as great potential and can bring a very new element to games.  Stop mentioning Wii motion control, as even with motion plus, it's still a babies toy by comparrison.

I'd laugh so much if Natal has to pay royalty fees to Sony because of this.
