Avalanche expects 'at least one' next-gen console out by 2014

Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios reckons Microsoft or Sony will have a new console on the market by 2014.
"We obviously talk to everybody, and everybody talks to us. We have some intelligence to go on that, by early 2014, we're pretty sure there'll be at least one next-generation console on the market,” studio manager David Grijns told EDGE.
Grijns comments shouldn’t really come as a surprise, seeing as how Avalanche recently set up a new studio in New York to focus on next-generation game development. In fact, the company is currently has an ‘unannounced AAA title’ in the pipeline for next-gen platforms.
"Anyone who says they know what the market is going to look like three years from now is just blowing smoke," he continued. "Whatever happens, we feel very confident that we'll be ready for it."
The comments echo those of id Software’s John Carmack, who said last week that he expects new platforms to arrive in just a couple of years, and suggested PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 will be roughly ‘ten times’ more powerful that current-gen hardware.
Despite this, Sony’s Jack Tretton recently indicated that a next-generation PlayStation platform wouldn’t be arriving any time soon.

Just because if they come out with PS4 in 2013 doesn't mean they will stop supporting the PS3. Just like when PS3 first came out they were still supporting the PS2.

The Ps2 has pretty much been done for the last couple years. The only games that get released on the ps2 nowadays are sports games. My prediction is announcement at next years E3 and then releasing in 2013. Or what they could do is tease us at next years E3 and then reveal it at the 2013 E3 and then have it released by 2014. Since Sony wants to do a 10 yr with the ps3 like ps2 then i could see a possible 2013 release for the ps4. They would still support the Ps3 just like they did before. I just hope they dont start off the way they did this gen which was a terrible start.

@1 - You idiot. The PS3 WILL have a 10 year PLUS lifespan, just like the PS2 has lasted more than 10 years. That will not stop the next playstation being available for sale before then.
As for the announcement, it needs filed in the "So obvious, it doesn't need stating" file.

Enough name calling, The PS3 will continue to be a functional system until 2016 (ten years past 2006) and beyond, if possible. That doesnt mean that they cant release a system before that. The PS2 continued to have decent releases atleast 2 years beyond the release of the PS3, so at MINIMUM we could expect a possible system release by 2014. But assuming the PS3 can maintain momentum with good games and value then there's no reason to jump the gun. Sony's on strategy has always been to not rush to the market they've said as much already so it's not a big deal. I could see MS jumping earlier if they get scared by the wiiu late next year but even THEY dont have much to worry about because all the wiius games will already be available on their consoles which have already been purchased
