Sony has confirmed that God of War: Ascension will feature multiplayer for the first time in the series.
Ascension will feature both online and offline multiplayer battles, with players able to customize playable characters with a variety of weapons, armor and more. Up to eight players can compete in this portion of the game, according to the press blurb.
The game will also feature an overhauled combat system, promptless mini-games and challenging new puzzles. As previously reported, Ascension will be a prequel and sees Kratos – armed with double-chained blades – fighting for redemption against Ares for his part in the death of Kratos’ family.
Game director Todd Papy commented: “The bar has been set quite high for this franchise as each God of War title succeeds in being better than the last.”
"But, unlike previous releases, we're providing a deeper look into Kratos' tormented past and psyche that fans have not seen before. Combined with refined gameplay, jaw-dropping visuals, and a fresh twist on competitive gaming with our new online multiplayer mode, I guarantee that God of War: Ascension will give fans what they have been eagerly waiting for, and much more."
God of War: Ascension has yet to attract a release date. Stay tuned for a live stream event on the EU PlayStation Blog later today.

Oh god no. God of War was one of the last games I'd have expected to stick on a multiplayer component. Uncharted managed it, but they had a really strong concept with which to build multiplayer upon, and Assassin's Creed managed it, but that game had some innovative multiplayer ideas and a good story to work it into, but God of War? I hope they don't screw this up, and I really hope this is the last game in the series.
