Music is a powerful medium. Capable of stirring up long-forgotten memories and evoking powerful emotion in the listener, music can reduce even the burliest of blokes into blubbering, crumpled heaps. And who says that us guys are afraid to show their sensitive side? Poppycock. Of course, video games are no exception to this rule, and as often is the case, a stellar soundtrack can greatly accentuate the on-screen antics, elevating even the most perfunctory scene to hard-hitting greatness.
In a continued celebration of some of gaming’s ear-pleasing aural accomplishments, PSU presents yet another instalment in our on-going Classic Tracks series. This time around, we venture to the foggy streets of Silent Hill and scrutinize the third game’s anthem ‘You’re Not Here.’

Name: You’re Not Here
Soundtrack: Silent Hill 3 Original Soundtrack
Composer(s): Akira Yamaoka (vocals by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn)
Silent Hill 3 is noted for the being the first entry in the venerable horror series to utilize vocals extensively. Akira Yamaoka’s ‘You’re Not Here’ is perhaps the most recognisable tune in the Silent Hill library in terms of vocal tracks, and features a rousing performance by long-time series contributor Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. The tune serves as Silent Hill 3’s unofficial anthem, playing during the intro sequence and also crops up in the credits to the 2006 movie adaptation of the original game. Lyrically the song plays on themes of loneliness and lost love, which can be attached to many of the themes that run throughout Silent Hill 3’s sweeping narrative. Interestingly, Konami released a special music video of the track featuring the game's protagonist Heather Mason, which we’ve included below. Enjoy.
