Platinum Games co-founder Hideki Kamiya appears none-too impressed with Superbot Entertainment’s upcoming PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, if a series of Tweets from the developer are anything to go by.
The Devil May Cry director took to the social networking site to label the upcoming brawler a “rip-off” of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. series.
“To try to please fans, you can do EVERYTHING. Great theory. Totally against mine,” he said.
“It’s just a rip-off. RT @mirainog I’d luv 2 C the P-100 heroes in Super Smash Bros. though! I agree w/U abt PS All-Stars, doesn’t look good.”
You can view all Kamiya’s Tweets via the screen cap below, courtesy of the chaps at NeoGAF.

PlayStation-All Stars Battle Royale is due out on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in fall 2012.

Ya know, at first, I thought it was a rip off too, but when I really thought about it, it really isn't. SB and PSASBR are both just entry's in this particular genre. Mascot fighter. Now granted, it's not the biggest genre ever, but still. There's no reason why SB can't get some competition. If you want to look at it his way, then every shooter is a rip-off of any other shooter, same goes with fighters, racing games, etc, etc.

Aren't Platinum games behind Anarchy Reigns? Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that not slightly similar? I personally feel this guy's worried because he knows Battle Royale will outsell Anarchy Reigns. The PlayStation icons are much more memorable and iconic, so it will appeal to a wider audience. I did think this was a rip-off at first too, but the more I see of it, the more differences there are, and it is shaping up to be less similar to Super Smash Bros. than I initially thought. I'm starting to agree with what a large number of people are saying: this is a genre in itself. Yes, at first, anything similar to Smash Bros. will come across as a blatant rip-off, but give it a good 5-10 years, when there are much more games like this, and 'mascot fighter' will be its own genre.
Having said all that, I'm not expecting this to be better than Brawl, but I am open to the concept of this, and I'm starting to believe that I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Who cares if its extremely similar, its a great formula and it is being made exactly how it should be. I bet lots of those hating on PS all stars enjoy Gears of War which is a complete rip off of the duck and cover system that made Kill Switch on PS2 such a popular game. Its not possible to create a unique fighting game. If they made it close zoom side scroller and more serious like tekken and soul calibur then it would just be a rip off of tekken and soul calibur! criticize stuff that needs criticism.
Bunch of hipsters...

Vortx you're an idiot. How can Namco rip-off their own franchise? It's very possible to create a unique fighting game, so stop trying to back up Sony and stop being a narrow-minded fanboy. There's taking ideas from something, and there is a blatant copy. PSASBR is a blatant copy of SSB. The only difference is you don't knock characters off screen. It disgusts me that these fanboys are going to let Sony get away with this, and it annoys me that this game will sell millions.
