David Cage: 'Sequels kill creativity'

Sequels are putting a strain on creativity within the videogames industry, says David Cage.

Speaking to OPM UK, the Heavy Rain creator and co-founder of Quantic Dream argued that gamers are encouraging publishers to “keep making the same game every Christmas, and everybody’s happy.”

“Many people want the same and if that’s what you offer them, they will gladly buy it,” he said. “The result is very simple. Gamers invest money in publishers having no interest in innovation.”

Cage, of course, has become well-known for breaking these conventions. Instead of churning out sequels, Quantic Dream has specialized in offering original ideas such as Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain, neither of which received a follow-up.

“We don’t give people what they expect. We want to give them something they want without knowing they want it.”

Cage is currently developing the company’s next PlayStation 3-exclusive project, Beyond: Two Souls, which is due out at some point this year.

Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain are great great games and Beyond: Two Souls will also end up in my collection. However, I got to say I really like the sounds of Grand Theft Auto V and Fallout 4!

I'm more interested in Grand Theft Auto V than any interactive drama Cage might be working on. I get that he's big on emotion and storytelling but to me the freedom to basically do whatever in a video game is more important.

Ironically, Beyond: Two Souls looks like more of the same - the only difference being that you can move around as a ghost but even then you're still triggering a linear sequence of events in one large cutscene.

    He's right, Silent Hill 2 was a non-inovative piece of s**t. <sarcasm>

There is truth to this, whether it makes sense coming from him or not.

He is at part right but that doesn't happen as often to say it like that as example: ACIII Uncharted series Mass Effect... Games that did stuck in loop hole are Crysis Dead Space Fable Halo until 4th come out etc...

@2 I disagree I rather play huge creative game than repet it all over and over again and blow crap out I rather play huge storiteling for 40-80 hours than aste my time however I hope GTA V will be great Rockstar is Rockstar .. Who in the world told you that Beyond is drama its more of Interactive action Adventure with HUGE EMOTINAL CONNECTION BETWEEN PLAYER AND THE GAME it makes you think before slush a boton on controller it makes you wonder if what you done is right Cage is know what he is doing and I see his point

He has a point but only in this gen. last gen squeals where just as good as first ones, however this gen most are lacking the big something their predecessor had. DA being the shining example.
