Retail giant Amazon Canada set tongues wagging recently when it posted a pre-order listing (via Express) for PlayStation VR with an accompanying price of $1,125.35.
Unsurprisingly, the listing was quickly removed, and the device’s page now simply reads unavailable. This isn’t the first time that Sony’s virtual reality headset has popped up on a retailer’s website, although it’s certainly the most expensive listing we’ve seen to date.
As it stands, Sony hasn’t announced anything official pertaining to a price for its PlayStation 4 VR device, and this could simply be a case of Amazon posting a placeholder. Then again, it’s definitely curious as to why they would list PS VR at such a high price; even if you take into account it’s in Canadian dollars, the cost still amounts to about £550.
The price of Sony’s VR headset has been a hot topic as of late. Earlier this week, a market research company weighed in on the subject, believing the device will retail for $400-600, while Tekken boss Katsuhiro Harada said he feels PS VR shouldn’t cost more than $300-400. Sony itself has said that the its VR headset will be positioned similarly to a new games console, although that’s about all we know so far.
The developer behind Quantum Break also chipped in on the subject, suggesting that PS VR could be a ‘game changer’ if it is given a consumer-friendly cost in wake of the Oculus Rift price announcement.
PlayStation VR will launch in the first half of 2016, and will see a number of games taking advantage of the device, including Ace Combat 7, Dreams, Gran Turismo Sport, Tekken 7, and Until Dawn; Rush of Blood. The headset will be powered by an external processing unit, which is roughly the size of a Nintendo Wii.
