Rumors of a possible Red Dead Redemption 2 announcement at Gamescom have started gathering pace this week, following confirmation that Take-Two Interactive will be present at the show following its absence at E3 2016.
The publishing giant has a number of titles to showcase that we already know about, such as the BioShock Collection, Mafia III, and Civilization VI, although we know the company also has various unannounced projects in the works, too.
Red Dead 2 coming to Gamescom?
Specifically, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said during an earnings call a few months back that, “Rockstar Games is of course hard at work on some exciting future projects that will be revealed soon." Could this be a new Red Dead Redemption? It’s certainly possible.
A follow-up to Rockstar Games’ critically acclaimed westerner has been rumored for a number of years now, with the latest reports pointing to an E3 reveal. That obviously didn’t happen, although we did get a look at the game’s alleged map earlier in the year, suggesting the title is moving along steadily.
If that wasn’t enough, a former employee of Rockstar Games has claimed that the studio is indeed working on a Red Dead sequel.
Most recently, Red Dead Redemption was added to the growing list of backwards compatibility titles for the Xbox One. Sadly, the game has yet to be added to Sony’s cloud-based streaming service, PlayStation Now.
Regardless of how far away an announcement is, a sequel is almost guaranteed considering that the Red Dead Redemption has shipped over 14 million units as of August 2015, and has picked up numerous ‘Game of the Year’ awards to boot.
While much of the plot is being kept under wraps, it has been suggested that Red Dead 2 is a prequel to the first game. Whether this means a return for original protagonist John Marston remains to be seen, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
