PS4 Pro memory boost would have caused compatibility issues, says Sony

Sony has shed light on its decision not to increase the memory of the PS4 Pro beyond that of the original console, with the new system boasting the same 8GB RAM as the regular PS4.

Speaking to 4Gamer, Sony Interactive Entertainment Engineering head, Masayasu Ito, explained that a boost in memory would lead to compatibility issues with the regular PS4, as developers would be pressed to create games with higher memory capacity in mind.

In addition, developers may ignore the increased memory pool in an effort not to distance themselves from the standard PS4. Either way, Sony isn’t keen on any of these possibilities happening, Ito-san noted.

Sony announced the PS4 Pro during its PlayStation Meeting in New York City last Wednesday, where it confirmed the console will ship on November 10, 2016 priced at $399/£349. In addition, the PS4 Slim will arrive in most territories on September 15.

While PS4 Pro boasts increased visual capabilities and offers a smoother frame rate, Sony has said that it is not designed to start a new console generation, nor even blur the lines between cycles.

Sony has also announced that PS4 users will receive a free update offering HDR capabilities, with a number of games already announced to take advantage of the feature, such as The Last of Us Remastered.

PS4 launched back in November 2013 and has already sold over 40 million units to date, putting it  comfortably ahead of its lead rival, the Xbox One. Speaking of Xbox, Microsoft has plans to release its own 4K-ready system, the Xbox Scorpio, in holiday 2017.
