In the second part of an already revelations-heavy interview with MTV, Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley has revealed that all SOE’s upcoming MMOs will appear on consoles.
He didn’t actually say this, to be fair – he just said "yes" when MTV popped the question. But that’s good enough for us.
According to Smedley, the MMO genre as a whole is slowly drifting further into console space. "Studies show that a lot of people who have consoles also have PCs," he told MTV. "However, they also show that most of the people that have a console play their console as their primary gaming device."
"I think what’s going to happen is you’re going to see a whole new generation of players that have been playing “Resistance” now start getting introduced to MMOs," Smedley went on. "I think it’s going to be a cool way for them to experience games that have been on the PC for a while, but have a totally different kind of gameplay on the console."
Sony is in a good position to exploit this trend, he said, as one of only two console MMO publishers on the market (the other’s Square Enix). Smedley also mentioned that SOE faces reduced technical challenges in transferring its PC MMOs to console, having put together an engine which works across both platforms.
"There was some up front investment, certainly, but we’ve invested in making sure that the technology runs on both," he said. "We’re adapting controls and some of the communication features but we’re trying to keep the same primary game."
