The nominees for Best Music/Rhythm Game of 2010 are…
And the winner is…
Though sales of music and rhythm games plummeted in 2010, the quality of music games flourished. Among a throng of innovative developers in the music game space, Harmonix again established its dominance with the brilliant Rock Band 3. This third entry in the venerable franchise introduced the keyboard peripheral as well as a radically new gameplay experience dubbed ‘Pro’ mode. Pro mode, with the help of some retooled peripherals, allows for more realistic music simulation; if you can play a song on Pro Expert, chances are you’ll be able to play it on a real instrument, too. (More detail is available in our review of the game.) For bridging the gap between mere imitation and real music creation, we award Rock Band 3 Best Music/Rhythm Game of 2010.
And the Community Award goes to…
The Community Award for Best Music/Rhythm Game proved the least popular category among award voters, mirroring falling music game sales. Still, Rock Band 3 came out on top, gobbling up 59.4% of votes cast. DJ Hero 2 was runner-up with 23.2%. The three other nominees, Def Jam Rapstar, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, and SingStar Dance, each received under 8% of votes cast. Congratulations to Harmonix for satisfying both the critics and the masses.
