Modern Warfare 3 vs. Battlefield 3: the war of words intensifies

In the latest war of words between this year’s two upcoming major first-person shooters, Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3, Sledgehammer Games has gone straight for EA Digital Illusion’s jugular.

In an interview with AusGamers at E3 earlier this month, the Modern Warfare 3 developer takes the opportunity to highlight Battlefield 3’s major weak spot by taking a dig at the fact it will only run at 30 frames per second, while MW3 runs at 60fps.

Referring to Battlefield 3’s extravagantly-named Frostbite Engine 2, Sledgehammer Games founder Glen Schofield said: "You can go out and name your engine and call it whatever you want. I’ve done that before – I’ve seen that trick. The bottom line is this game will run at 60 frames a second. Not sure any of our competitors will.”

It’s not all about the game engine though, both titles are set to offer a very different shooter experience something that Schofield himself acknowledges. "You don’t ship an engine, you ship a game,” he tells AusGamers.

Nonetheless, Schofield ends his short interview by making it crystal clear which game he thinks people should buy this holiday season, suggesting that gamers should be worried about any console game running at 60fps.

"I’d be a little scared at this point, in June, if I was looking forward to a particular game that wasn’t on the console and running at 60," said Scholfield. "60 is our competitive edge and you just don’t throw that away."

Both games launch within weeks of each other, with Battlefield 3 on October 25 and MW3 on November 8, 2011.
