PSP2 will drop "the stupid battery-sucking" UMD drive, says Perry

Dave Perry, Shiny Entertainment founder and Acclaim COO, "tweeted" yesterday that the PSP2 won’t have "the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive" seen in the current PSP. It’s a bold statement to make, but as an Executive Video Game Industry Consultant, he’s certainly more reliable than your average forum poster claiming to have an inside scoop.

He seems absolutely sure of his claim, too. Speaking to GameDaily today, Perry stated that he’s "certain" that the PSP2 will be dropping the questionable disc format.

"I can’t reveal my sources, but you can be certain there’s no UMD [in the PSP2], which means [a] fully digital online device, and you know I know people," asserted Perry.

With Sony’s recent focus on downloadable content, dropping the UMD drive seems like a reasonable move for the next PSP. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: physical media formats are coming to an end.
