Today at the Consumer Electronics Show 2014, Sony revealed the cloud gaming service PlayStation Now, which will bring original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 games to a variety of devices.
PlayStation Now will be available on not only the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, but on smartphones, tablets., newer Sony Bravia HDTVs. Players will be able to rent specific games or pay a subscription fee for access to a library of titles. Online multiplayer, Trophies, and messages will be supported by PS Now.
A closed beta for the service will begin at the end of January in the United States with a full rollout scheduled for this summer.
The technology is available to demo on a PS Vita or Bravia HDTV at Sony’s CES booth with The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, God of War Ascension, and Puppeteer.
The electronics giant previously purchased the cloud gaming company Gaikai in 2012 for $380 million, in an effort to bring streaming games to Sony devices and a form of backwards-compatibility to the PS4. Cloud gaming works by running the game in real-time off-site on servers and then streaming the video and audio back to the player.
