The director behind the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake on PlayStation 4 has admitted he was surprised to discover he was heading up the project.
Speaking with Famitsu magazine (via Kotaku), Tetsuya Nomura said that he was merely brought in to voice his opinion on various aspects during pre-production on the remake.
Nomura-san didn’t actually expect to direct the game, and only found out he was doing the job after his name appeared in the credits of a short video showed internally by Square Enix.
He then contacted original director of Final Fantasy VII, Yoshinori Kitase, by phone who simply replied "of course" when Nomura asked about his position as director on the project.
Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced during Sony’s E3 2015 press conference following years of speculation and fan demand. Its origins dated back some ten years, after Sony debuted a tech demo of the game’s intro running on PS3 hardware.
Square Enix has admitted that the game’s story may deviate from the source material, although will not eschew some of the more light-hearted moments of the 1997 version.
The game has yet to attract a release date, although considering Final Fantasy VII celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2017, it is likely we’ll see the game appear around then.
