Naughty Dog says Sony ‘lets us make whatever games we want’

Sony has given The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog free rein to create whatever gaming experience it wants, according to studio’s Creative Director, Neil Druckmann.

"What’s awesome about Sony and how they treat us is they let us make whatever game we want to make," said Druckmann, during a chat with Kinda Funny Games. "When we were still working on The Last of Us, we started making a Jak and Daxter reboot and then we said ‘it’s not working for us can we do something completely new?’ and [Sony said] ‘absolutely’."

Naughty Dog is currently working on what is likely the final chapter in the Uncharted series, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which is due out exclusively on PlayStation 4 on March 18, 2016. Beyond that, it’s not known what the California-based studio will work on next, although it has said it has at least one more game to come out for the PS4. Rumors point to a sequel to The Last of Us, but nothing official has been confirmed as of yet

Uncharted 4 takes place a few years after the events of its predecessor, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and sees Nathan Drake the hunt for a legendary pirate’s treasure. His globe-trotting adventure will reunite him with his long-time mentor, Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan, as well as his brother Sam, who was previously thought dead during a mission some years before. The game will introduce dialogue choices during key moments, though Naughty Dog has stressed they won’t offer the same freedom as open-world games.

Naughty Dog recently wrapped up the game’s multiplayer beta, which ran from December 3-13 for those who purchased the Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection on PS4. Check out the latest Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End footage to see how it’s shaping up.
