Take this one with a graiin of salt, but a rumour has emerged that Assassin’s Creed, a series now notorious for annual releases, may not get a main entry again until 2017, with the new setting likely to be Egypt.
The story comes from a supposed developer posting on 4Chan, where they state that the extra time spent on the next core entry will be to make it more like The Witcher III in how it operates, basically rebuilding the game for the first time in the series’ nine year history.
The post was written as follows:
Egypt. There won’t be an AC in 2016. You may screencap this and refer to it when nothing is shown in E3 2016. You’ll have to wait until 2017 for it. The reason: It will be a complete revamp of the series. The game is going for a Witcher feel, with player progression, freeform combat system. Horse is back, and boats too. It s made by the Black Flag team. You may leave any question you want answered.
Now, while the source of this information is debatable (4Chan is often rife with rumoured nonsense), it does seem entirely plausible for Ubisoft to overhaul the series at this point.
In the coming year, The Division, Ghost Recon Wildlands, For Honor, South Park, and Far Cry Primal will all be vying for blockbuster roles in the Ubisoft roster, meaning there’s plenty of potential moneymakers there alone to compensate for a lack of Creed.
Also, it only takes a few extra months of development time to knock the next Assassin’s Creed into 2017, as the series usually launches around November. It has always seemed a bit odd that Ubisoft launch two or three big games within weeks of each other during the autumn period, so this could also remedy that issue as well.
Most of all, it is probably best to make sweeping changes, just as last year’s Syndicate wrung the last drops out of the current formula whilst experimenting a little to create one the best entries in the series for some time, but ultimately, one that sold the least amount for a main entry.
So, is 2017 too far away for new Assassin’s Creed? Or is it too soon for you? Where do you want to see the series go next? Let us know!
