Dark Souls III grinds its axe into U.K. charts, PS4 version beats Xbox One by huge margin

From Software’s brutal action-RPG Dark Souls III has debuted at no.1 on the U.K. All Format Chart following its release on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One last Tuesday.

Not only did the notoriously tricky dungeon crawler dethrone previous hit maker Quantum Break, but it also smashed launch sales of its 2014 predecessor, Dark Souls II, by a massive 61 percent.

In addition, a huge 71 percent of all physical copies sold were attributed to the PS4 version of Dark Souls III, with Xbox One making up just 26 percent.

The Souls franchise originally started out as a cult favorite with the 2009 PS3-exclusive title, Demon’s Souls. However, with the release of Dark Souls in 2011, the series started to gain mainstream appeal, reaching commercial heights with Dark Souls II in 2014.

In addition, creator Hidetaka Miyazaki also headed up the PS4-exclusive Bloodborne, which shares many similarities with its Souls-flavored cousins. It isn’t considered part of the franchise, however.
