Report: PS4.5 ‘Neo’ is the real deal; a new, more powerful PS4 likely due in March 2017

According to tech wizards Digital Foundry, overnight reports of the PlayStation 4.5, codenamed Neo, are indeed authentic.

GiantBomb initially grabbed the scoop on the upcoming PS4 console revamp, which has been rumored since early this year. See our earlier story for full details on the leak.

Now, Digital Foundry, who have claimed to have had a butcher’s at the same leaked documents as GiantBomb, have said that Sony is “openly sharing” details of the unannounced hardware. It also confirmed the Neo moniker and said that the console is the real deal.

"A second-gen test kit, again not based on the actual retail shell, goes out in June," it wrote. "Sony gives more intensive Neo briefings at its DevCon event in in May, while code submission for Neo-compatible titles begins in August."

Digital Foundry added that while a release for this year is possible, it is “more likely” that Sony will roll out the new hardware in March 2017. Sony, as one might have expected, has not made any comment on the subject.

Previous reports have said that Sony aims to announce the PS4.5 before the launch of PlayStation VR, which is due to ship in October this year. Other Internet whisperings have suggested a holiday 2016 release and a price point of $400.
